Defying the Odds
Natalia Sheppard has always challenged the status quo. She became one of the world’s first female drum and bass MCs, proving the doubters wrong. From her humble beginnings in a small town, she rose to international fame. When the pandemic disrupted her touring schedule, she focused on re-releasing an old album and creating a new film.
Celebrating 15 Years of Lyric on My Lip
Drum and bass fans know her as MC Tali. Her debut album, Lyric on My Lip, has just turned 15 and is being re-released on digital platforms for the first time. To mark this milestone, a documentary about her rise in the music industry is available on YouTube. The documentary features old tour footage and interviews shot during lockdown.
“Lockdown was incredibly productive for me. I was really creative,” she says. “I started working on new music, and my husband [Benn Rolls-Sheppard, whom she married in 2010] and I found that we just love being together. We’re each other’s favorite person, which was so nice.”
A Journey of Passion and Perseverance
Tali’s journey from a farm girl in South Taranaki to a global music sensation is nothing short of inspiring. She grew up in Awatuna with her three siblings, artist mother Margaret Scott, and dairy-farmer-turned-property-investor father, Ian. Her love for music and performing arts led her to pursue a career in the industry.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Tali’s determination and passion for music have made her a legend in the drum and bass world. She has released seven albums, toured the world, and played at major international festivals. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief.
