Jonathan Bailey’s Remarkable Transformation in Wicked: For Good

The metamorphosis of Jonathan Bailey, recently named Sexiest Man Alive, into the Scarecrow for the Wicked sequel was a detailed and fascinating journey. Frances Hannon, an Academy Award-winning make-up artist renowned for her work on both Wicked films, shares the intricate details of this extraordinary transformation.

The Art of Transformation

Frances Hannon, the creative force behind the striking appearances of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the Wicked films, discusses her experience transforming Jonathan Bailey. “It took an average of four hours,” Frances notes, emphasizing the dedication and precision required for the process.

In an exclusive interview, Frances adds: “We discarded the blue contact lenses used for Fiyero [Jonathan’s character in the first film] and returned to the natural, earthy color of Jonathan’s eyes, which are a deep, rich brown. All these subtle touches brought the look together.”

Creating the Scarecrow Look

Frances and her team meticulously designed the Scarecrow’s appearance, ensuring it would be both authentic and visually captivating on the big screen. “We searched for a burlap [jute material] that would be soft and skin-like in texture, and considered whether it would still be appealing on a 60ft screen,” she explains. “We also drew inspiration from the classic Wizard of Oz, paying homage to its iconic design.”

Jonathan Bailey: Beyond the Surface

Regarding Jonathan’s title as Hollywood’s most handsome heartthrob, Frances shares her insights: “I understand why he’s earned that title, and he truly deserves it. But it’s his soul; his inner beauty that truly sets him apart. There’s nobody kinder, more giving, or more grateful than Jonathan Bailey.”

Frances Hannon: A Legacy of Excellence

Frances Hannon, 59, won an Oscar for her make-up work on The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014 and was recently nominated for her contributions to Wicked: For Good. Her collaboration with director Jon M. Chu and producer Mark Platt has been a career highlight. “It’s been nearly three years since we began, and it has been the best experience of my entire career,” she says.

The Magic of Song and Teamwork

Frances treasures the memories of working with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who portray the heroines Elphaba and Glinda. “Those two women are truly special, and their unique qualities shine on screen,” she says. “Many people spend hundreds of dollars per ticket to see the show once, and I got to experience it every day for 12 hours. It’s incredibly uplifting.”

Both Ariana and Cynthia were deeply involved in their looks, from make-up to hair and costume. In the second film, Glinda transforms into Glinda the Good, residing in Emerald City, while Elphaba is on the run, seeking refuge in a magical treehouse. “Ariana’s wigs were much paler and around six to eight inches longer – not only to show the passage of time but also to give her a more princess-like quality,” Frances explains.

Looking Forward

As for saying goodbye to the film, Frances is philosophical. “I’m not sad this chapter is coming to a close – I’ve moved on,” she says. “I’m proud, but not sad.” Her next project is the mystery film Jack of Spades, starring Lesley Manville.
