Transform Your Photoshoot: Avoiding Clichés for Unique and Artistic Results

Planning a spring photoshoot? Photographer Alena Shcherbak shares insights on how to make your photoshoot stand out as a piece of art rather than a collection of clichés. Your role is more significant than you might think.

Photography as Art

Photography is an art form. Not every photo qualifies as art, but those that evoke emotions certainly do. Creating a powerful image requires more than just a good camera and a skilled photographer; it requires your unique input.

I dislike the concept of “what’s trendy this year.” To create something truly interesting, you don’t need to chase trends. Instead, listen to yourself. Within you, not on the vast expanse of the internet, you’ll find that perfect shot or series of images that will evoke emotions and invite closer inspection.

Finding Inspiration

The key to a successful photoshoot is inspiration. We often overlook how much our surroundings influence our choices. Most of the time, we are inspired by friends’ photos on social media, leading to repetitive styles and settings. To break this cycle, seek inspiration from art galleries, museums, fashion shows, and classic films.

Classic art always remains relevant. It offers unique color combinations, compositions, and character interactions that might resonate with you. These elements can spark original ideas that will inspire both you and your photographer.

Choosing a Style

Selecting a style for your photoshoot is crucial. What mood do you want to capture? Which era interests you? For instance, I am currently inspired by vintage styles. Many photographers are even returning to film or using retro editing techniques to capture that special atmosphere.

Embodying a Character

Perhaps you are a talented artist, an exceptional dancer, or a master baker. These aspects of your personality can be beautifully captured in a photoshoot. Choose an image that represents your passion. Alternatively, you might want to embody a role you’ve always dreamed of, whether it’s an actress, a mechanic, or any other character. Photography allows you to explore these roles and express yourself emotionally.

Take a moment to write down a list of your different life moments, moods, and character traits. Then, add people, professions, and states that attract you. This exercise will open up a multitude of new images you can embody.

Selecting a Location

Choosing the right location is essential. In warm weather, I recommend outdoor settings where you can relax and enjoy the process without feeling rushed. Options are endless: parks, roads, abandoned buildings, or a bench near your home. Once, during a bike ride, I discovered a courtyard with abandoned cars. Two weeks later, we shot a love story there. The couple had always wanted a photoshoot in such a setting, and the results were stunning.

Planning Your Look

Carefully plan your appearance, including clothing, hairstyle, and makeup. Decide if you need a stylist, makeup artist, or hairstylist. You might even consider renting costumes. Discuss all details with your photographer to ensure a cohesive vision.

I always imagine a complete story for each photoshoot, as if we are capturing scenes from a film. This approach helps in visualizing each detail, from nail polish to lipstick color.

Finding the Right Photographer

Every photographer has a unique style, so choose wisely. You can find your ideal photographer through:

  • Internet and social media searches using relevant hashtags.
  • Attending photography exhibitions and similar events. Don’t hesitate to approach photographers and discuss potential collaborations.
  • Recommendations from friends. If you like someone’s photos, find out who took them.

Remember, expensive doesn’t always mean better. Evaluate photographers based on their portfolios rather than their prices. Arrange a preliminary meeting to ensure you feel comfortable and connected with the photographer. Photography is an intimate process, and you should feel at ease.

Being Yourself

Unnatural poses and excessive photo editing can detract from the authenticity of your photos. Show your true self rather than conforming to standards. Naturalness and openness make photos beautiful, not just technical perfection. A simple portrait on a gray background can become a masterpiece if it captures your true essence, emotions, and mood.

By following these steps, you can organize a photoshoot that reflects your inner world and remains memorable for years to come.
