Miracle Drops for Lera: A Chance to See the World

Lera’s ability to learn in a classroom depends on whether she can see what’s written on the board. She worries that she might have to switch to home schooling. A year ago, donors helped make a miracle happen—Lera avoided blindness. Today, $124,100 is needed to restore her right eye’s vision. With this, nothing can stop the cheerful and wise-beyond-her-years Lera from achieving her dreams.

Lera’s Story

Seven-year-old Lera is a bundle of energy and charm. Her infectious personality and wisdom leave a lasting impression on everyone she meets. Lera was diagnosed with vision problems at a very young age, including lipodermoid of the left eye, coloboma of the upper eyelid, dacryocystitis, and keratitis. Although her keratitis was initially treated with medication, it recurred three years later. After a respiratory infection, Lera developed neurotrophic keratitis in both eyes, a severe condition that can lead to corneal destruction, ulcers, and retinal perforation. By the age of six, Lera could only see objects at arm’s length.

The Challenge of Neurotrophic Keratitis

Treating neurotrophic keratitis is a significant challenge in modern ophthalmology, especially in children. Lera has undergone numerous examinations, surgeries, and daily procedures to preserve her vision. A year ago, she completed a six-week course of an innovative medication called Cenegermin, which restores nerve sensitivity and promotes corneal healing. The treatment was successful for her left eye, but her right eye’s condition remains stagnant, with a persistent corneal ulcer that could worsen with any illness.

A Dream Come True

This year, Lera’s dream came true—she started first grade. She loves going to school, reciting poetry, completing her assignments, and making new friends. However, she faces challenges due to her vision. “Lera is concerned about whether she can see what the teacher writes on the board,” shares Tatiana, Lera’s mother. “She says she can see, but sometimes she has to strain her eye to work. Lera worries that she might have to switch to home schooling.”
