Laura Dern: Life’s Journey Leaves Its Mark
Laura Dern: Life’s Journey Leaves Its Mark
The Hollywood Academy bestowed an invaluable gift upon the renowned actress by awarding her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in “Marriage Story,” just before her birthday.
The Oscar Buzz
Every year, the anticipation of who will take home the Oscar captivates millions worldwide. By New Year’s, numerous predictions from film experts and enthusiasts flood the media. Producers and studio executives often delay the release of their best films until the end of the year, fueling the interest of critics and audiences alike. Consequently, the process of determining the winners of the most prestigious film awards usually spans several months. Given that the nominees are typically not random, predicting the winner of the coveted statuette is no easy task. However, there are occasions when a winner stands out long before the marathon concludes.
Marriage Story: A Tale of Love and Loss
This season was one such occasion. In late August, at the Venice Film Festival, Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” premiered. Despite its title, the film is a poignant tale of separation. Against the backdrop of a crumbling marriage, the characters fight for custody of their young son. Both Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver delivered stellar performances, creating sincere portraits of spouses going through the painful process of divorce. They managed to evoke empathy from the audience, making viewers see the conflict from both sides. The sympathies of the audience constantly shifted between the wife and the husband, both striving to gain custody of their child.
However, when the wife’s lawyer appeared on screen and delivered a monologue about how society perceives the roles of mother and father differently, the cinema hall erupted in applause mid-film. At that moment, it was clear that the film’s creators had struck a nerve with society.
Laura Dern’s Stellar Performance
Much of this success is due to Laura Dern, who effortlessly transformed into a successful lawyer from Beverly Hills. When her character, Nora, eloquently and emotionally explains to her client the different standards applied to fathers and mothers in determining child custody rights, there is no doubt that she genuinely believes in her words. “Let’s be honest: the idea of the perfect father only emerged about 30 years ago. Before that, it was considered normal if the father didn’t participate in raising the children, was often absent, selfish, and unreliable. Of course, we want fathers to be different, but we still accept their weaknesses. People do not accept the same weaknesses in mothers. We do not accept them structurally or spiritually. Because at the core of our Judeo-Christian culture is Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is perfect! She is a virgin! Giving birth to a child! She steadfastly supports him, embracing his dead body after his death. And the father is not there at all. He wasn’t even there for the sex act! You have to be perfect because higher standards will always be applied to you.”
After such words, you don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Nora, played by Laura, captivates not only the judges but also the audience. It’s impossible to argue with her; it’s better to surrender immediately. In any case, I left the cinema on Lido Island convinced that the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress would go to Laura Dern. Needless to say, I was not surprised when, on February 9, at the ceremonial ceremony in Los Angeles, that is exactly what happened.
An Oscar-Worthy Birthday Gift
In her acceptance speech, Laura Dern noted that this was the best birthday gift— the day after the ceremony, the actress turned 53. She was born into a family of famous actors—Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. It was through her parents that Laura began acting in films when she was just 6 years old. Right after that, she appeared with her mother on the set of a Martin Scorsese film. The famous director called the girl a born actress. Although she only appeared in one scene, where her young character ate ice cream, Scorsese’s words stayed with her for life. And not in vain. As it turned out, 46 years later, in the presence of the famous director in the audience, she received the Oscar.
A Legacy of Acting Excellence
Throughout her long career, Laura Dern has had the opportunity to work with such celebrated directors as Peter Bogdanovich, Steven Spielberg, and Clint Eastwood. David Lynch himself, calling her his muse, went to provocative lengths to get the Academy to nominate Laura for an Oscar for her role in “Inland Empire.” Although Lynch did not succeed at the time, he helped the actress return to cinema after the birth of her two children. Moreover, she already had an Oscar nomination for her leading role in “Rambling Rose.” Furthermore, Laura and her mother were the first in the history of the awards to be nominated as a daughter and mother who played in the same film. Subsequently, Laura was nominated again in 2014 for her role in “Wild.” Her father, Bruce Dern, was also nominated twice for the prestigious award but never received it. Therefore, it was touching at the ceremonial ceremony to hear Laura’s words that she shares her Oscar with her parents, who were her true “heroes of acting.”
Meeting Laura Dern
Our meeting with the actress took place before she was awarded the Golden Globe and the Oscar. Looking at Laura Dern, one cannot help but think that with her enviable figure and tall stature, she could certainly have succeeded in the modeling business. Laura did indeed receive tempting offers, but her passion has always been cinema. Her first modeling experience came after she turned fifty. Her son Ellery, however, debuted on the catwalk at the age of sixteen.
Creating the Character of Nora
“Many would envy the wardrobe of your character in ‘Marriage Story.’ In your portrayal, she not only looks stunning but also manages to win anyone’s trust. How did you manage to embody such a genuine character?”
“First and foremost, the main credit for creating my character and the other characters in the film undoubtedly goes to Noah Baumbach, who is not only the director but also the screenwriter. He wrote a truly perfect script. When I first read it, I couldn’t hold back my tears, leaving him a message on his answering machine.”
“You see, he described in the script even the sound that is heard when my character kicks off her shoes before climbing onto the couch with her feet during her first meeting with the film’s main character, Nicole. She is brilliantly played by Scarlett Johansson. Thus, Nora signals to Nicole that she is not just a client to her. She understands her as only a close friend who has gone through a divorce herself and knows what it means to raise a child alone would. During the next meeting, she apologizes for her appearance because she had to spend a lot of time on parental duties in the morning. Although in reality, she looks stunning. Thereby, she shows Nicole that everything is possible: ‘I understand you. Not like everyone else. Don’t worry, everything will be fine. You are not alone.'”
Acting and Lawyering
“To be a successful lawyer, do you have to be a good actor?”
“I have met several lawyers in my life who admitted to taking acting lessons. Of course, lawyers need to be good actors. Especially those who deal with criminal cases. After all, they need to justify the lies that they often”
