From Zero to Hero: How One Nigerian Mom Built a Booming Beverage Business Against All Odds
How a Nigerian Mother Turned Struggle Into a Thriving Beverage Empire
In the bustling streets of Kaduna State, Nigeria, Jummai’s story is a powerful reminder of what resilience, education, and sheer determination can achieve. At just 30 years old, married with two young children—a 4-year-old daughter and a 10-month-old son—Jummai faced the harsh reality of financial instability. Her husband’s modest income as a construction laborer barely covered the family’s basic needs: food, healthcare, rent, and other essentials. But her life took a dramatic turn when she joined the Stronger Women, Stronger Nations program by Women for Women International (WfWI).
The Turning Point: Business Skills That Changed Everything
Before enrolling in the program, Jummai tried her hand at petty trading, selling soft drinks to make ends meet. But without proper business knowledge, her efforts lacked direction. She struggled to turn a consistent profit, and her two previous business attempts had failed—largely because she mixed friendship with business. Friends, family, and customers would buy items on credit, and nearly 90% of them never paid her back. Discouraged, she swore off entrepreneurship for good.
That all changed in November 2020. With the stipend she saved from her WfWI training, Jummai decided to give business another shot—this time, with a solid strategy. Using her newfound skills, she launched a small beverage production business right from her home. Today, neighbors and community members line up at her door to buy her drinks, and her business continues to grow. In a time when rising food prices and the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic have left many families struggling, Jummai’s success has become a beacon of hope.
Breaking the Cycle of Hardship for Good
Jummai’s business isn’t just a source of income—it’s a lifeline for her entire family. She now supports her household alongside her parents, ensuring her children have access to education, healthcare, and a stable home. “My business keeps growing, which is so important because many families are facing hardship right now,” she says. Her success has also inspired other women in her community to pursue their own ventures, making her a role model for those around her.
One of the most valuable lessons Jummai learned was the importance of keeping business and personal relationships separate. She no longer offers credit to friends or family, and she maintains a meticulous record book to track her sales and expenses. This discipline has allowed her to build a sustainable enterprise. In fact, her business has expanded so much that she now supplies drinks to local shops, broadening her customer base and increasing her revenue.
Empowering Others Through Knowledge and Support
Jummai’s journey hasn’t just transformed her own life—it’s created a ripple effect in her community. She actively shares the skills and knowledge she’s gained with other women, encouraging them to start their own income-generating activities. She also emphasizes the importance of health and financial independence, urging women to take control of their futures. “I feel so excited about what I’ve learned from Women for Women, and I share these skills with the women around me,” she says.
Her influence extends beyond her immediate circle. Both women and their husbands in her area have taken notice of the positive changes in Jummai’s life, and many now express interest in joining the WfWI program. Jummai is also a member of the Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) group within her WfWI program. She encourages her group sisters to participate in savings circles, where they pool resources to support one another financially.
A Newfound Confidence and Respect
Jummai’s growth isn’t just financial—it’s personal. She describes herself as wise, skilled, and confident, particularly in her business knowledge and understanding of her rights. Her family now respects her more than ever, often seeking her advice and valuing her opinions. “My family respects me more now; they seek and listen to my advice because they’re very proud of me,” she shares.
Her dreams for the future are ambitious but grounded in her unwavering determination. She plans to rent a shop for her business in the near future, further expanding her operations. Beyond that, she aims to support her two children through school, continue helping other women in her community, and one day, purchase a plot of land to build a house of her own. “That last goal is my dream, and I’m so confident I’ll achieve it someday,” she says.
A Message of Hope and Gratitude
Jummai’s story is a testament to the power of education, hard work, and community support. She credits her WfWI sponsor as a great source of inspiration and hope, and she’s grateful for the opportunities the program has provided. “My situation would have been so different if I hadn’t acquired the skills and knowledge I have now from my WfWI program,” she reflects.
For Jummai, success isn’t just about financial stability—it’s about empowerment, independence, and the ability to uplift others. Her journey serves as a reminder that with the right tools and mindset, anyone can overcome adversity and build a brighter future. As she continues to grow her business and inspire those around her, Jummai’s story is far from over. It’s a story of resilience, and it’s one that will undoubtedly inspire many more women to take the first step toward their own success.
