Eurovision 2014: The Most Memorable Contestants
Published: May 7, 2014
The first semifinal of Eurovision 2014 took place yesterday in Copenhagen, and our very own Maria Yaremchuk made it to the finals, which will be held on May 10. As always, the main musical competition in Europe features a plethora of bright, eccentric, and scandalous personalities. Let’s take a look at some of the most memorable contestants this year.
Aram MP3 (Armenia)
Aram MP3, representing sunny Armenia, is presenting the song “Not Alone” at Eurovision. Considered a strong contender, Aram is predicted to take first place in this year’s competition. The 30-year-old’s song has resonated with many listeners, and he is supported by the extensive Armenian diaspora worldwide. Even the legendary French-Armenian chansonnier Charles Aznavour has wished Aram luck, approving his song choice for the musical contest.
Pollapönk (Iceland)
Iceland is represented this year by the group Pollapönk, whose name translates to “Kids Playing Punk.” The band members have been a vibrant presence at the competition, donning colorful and playful costumes that have brought smiles to everyone around them. Their song, “No Prejudice,” is just as lively and fun as the group itself. Pollapönk’s bearded members have declared an all-out war on prejudice at Eurovision.
Valentina Monetta (San Marino)
San Marino, the oldest European state with a territory of just 60 square kilometers and a population of 32,000, has sent Valentina Monetta to represent them for the third consecutive year. The 39-year-old Eurovision veteran is versatile in various musical styles, including jazz, soul, funk, R&B, and even hip-hop. Despite her evident vocal talents, she failed to make it to the finals last year. Perhaps this year will bring her more luck.
Twin Twin (France)
France is represented by the trio Twin Twin, who experiment with various musical genres. Their music is a blend of pop, rap, folk, rock, hip-hop, and funk. This year, they brought the song “Moustache” to the competition. The group seems to be thoroughly enjoying their Eurovision experience.
Conchita Wurst (Austria)
The standout contestant of this year’s Eurovision is Austria’s Conchita Wurst. Representing Austria is Tom Neuwirth, a transvestite who performs as a bearded beauty. Tom’s journey to Copenhagen was fraught with controversy, as not everyone understood his desire to represent Austria at Eurovision. Before gaining fame as Conchita, Tom had performed in a pop group and participated in several talent shows without much success. However, when he adopted his female persona, he became incredibly popular in his homeland, particularly within the LGBT community. It remains to be seen how Europe will receive this muscular, bearded contestant.
Let’s remember that the Eurovision 2014 final will take place on May 10. Let’s cheer for Ukraine!
