Building a Modeling Career Abroad: Insights from Polina Yatsuk

Polina Yatsuk, a professional model, shares her journey of moving from Russia to America, the intricacies of the international modeling industry, and the challenges she faced. She also provides valuable advice on starting a new life abroad.

Every Step Towards Success is a Challenge

Achieving success often requires bold and decisive steps. A year ago, I moved to Los Angeles, which has given me the chance to reinvent myself and my goals. America, known as the land of opportunities, played a significant role in this transformation.

This was a challenging step, and not everyone can navigate it easily. Moving to another country often means starting from scratch, regardless of your previous fame or accomplishments. Imagine building your life for years, establishing connections, and making friends, only to leave it all behind and start anew. It’s like a Hollywood movie plot, but it’s real life.

Language and Cultural Barriers

Many immigrants face language and cultural barriers. Without a good command of English, finding a decent job can be difficult. You need to communicate with clients, interact on shoots, read documents, and much more.

When I started attending castings, I noticed that locals use many abbreviations and acronyms in their dialogue and correspondence. For example, terms like SAG, Non Union, Buyout, Credits, and TBD are commonly used. Initially, I had to look up these terms online, which was time-consuming. Understanding and adapting to these new abbreviations can be challenging and may lead to homesickness and emotional stress.

The Stress of Finding an Agency

Finding a modeling agency can be particularly stressful. If you’re doing it alone, be prepared for a long wait before getting any response. I was fortunate to find my agency quickly, but I know many cases where the search took months.

There are many modeling agencies, and it’s crucial to choose one that is genuinely interested in your development. To make the right choice, consider factors such as the agency’s market experience, the models they represent, and the brands they work with. Check their social media, ask for opinions from other models, and gather as much information as possible.

The modeling system in America is similar to other countries. A good portfolio combined with a strong agency increases your chances of getting work. My experience has taught me that beauty is subjective; what matters most is your presentation, confidence, adaptability, and openness. These qualities are highly valued and can open new opportunities for you.

Be Prepared for Setbacks but Keep Moving Forward

The most important advice I can give, based on my experience, is to be prepared for setbacks but to keep moving forward. Rejections are inevitable in this business, and I’ve faced my share. You can’t please everyone, and that’s okay. Maybe a specific job requires a different look or special features that you don’t have.

Never despair or focus on your shortcomings. Even if it seems like nothing is working out, don’t give up. Tomorrow could be your big break! Believe in yourself and strive to achieve your goals. Each of us has a unique path and experience, and no boundaries should stop you from realizing your dreams.
