Pedaling Through Time: How Bicycles Transformed Our Fashion

Fashion experts agree that nothing has shaken up women’s clothing quite like the bicycle. This two-wheeled wonder freed women from tight corsets and bulky dresses, introducing comfy, loose-fitting clothes and pants. But it wasn’t just women who benefited—men also got a fashion upgrade, with comfortable, breathable fabrics and relaxed fits becoming the norm. Let’s take a spin through history and see how the bicycle truly changed the fashion game and keeps influencing our wardrobes today.

The Bicycle’s Impact on Women’s Fashion

Before the mid-1800s, women’s fashion was all about heavy, voluminous dresses and tight corsets. Sure, they were stylish, but comfort? Not so much. Health issues were common, but there weren’t any other options. Then, the bicycle rolled into aristocratic society in the 19th century, and everything changed. Bicycle rides became the latest trend, a way to show off wealth and social status.

At first, women rode bicycles in dresses, later switching to “bicycle skirts.” But let’s be real—these outfits were far from practical. In the 1850s, “bloomers”—also known as “bicycle pantaloons”—hit the scene in America and quickly spread to Europe, replacing skirts entirely. But not everyone was a fan, and bloomers faced some serious backlash.

“Women rode into the 20th century on bicycles,” as the saying goes. And as time went on, bicycle pants became more accepted. By the early 1900s, women had claimed victory, and bicycle pants became a staple in the classic cycling outfit.

The Rise of Bicycle Shorts

Fast forward to 1932, and women started wearing shorts—first just for sports, but eventually, like pants, they became a versatile piece for all aspects of life. Then, in the 1980s, bicycle shorts hit the scene, designed to make cycling more comfortable. But it didn’t stop there. During the aerobics craze, bicycle shorts gained global popularity.

Princess Diana played a big role in this trend. Instead of sticking to strict royal protocols, she rocked bicycle shorts for city strolls. And just like that, bicycle shorts hit the city streets, red carpets, and runways, showing no signs of slowing down.

In recent years, bicycle shorts have been a major trend in fashion shows, appearing in collections by big names like Fendi, Chanel, Jacquemus, Cavalli, Mugler, and Louis Vuitton. Celebrities such as supermodel Bella Hadid, designer Matt Sarafa, actress Emily Ratajkowski, model Hailey Baldwin, writer Alexa Chung, and many others have been spotted wearing bicycle shorts.

Transforming Your Image with Sporty Style

Commentary by stylist Zhanna Ulasevich:

“Bicycle shorts can create a variety of looks. For a casual outing or meeting friends, pair them with a sporty hoodie or a t-shirt. To incorporate them into your office wardrobe, opt for elongated bicycle shorts in matte fabric or classic straight-cut shorts with a blazer.”

“Swap the blazer for a bomber jacket, and you’re ready for the dance floor. To emphasize your femininity, pair bicycle shorts with elegant sandals or high-heeled pumps, and tie a loose shirt in a knot. Complete the look with a clutch or a small handbag.”

“Sneakers are a foolproof footwear choice for bicycle shorts. However, high-heeled shoes can also complement the look when paired with a jacket, tunic, or dress.”

How the Bicycle Shaped Men’s Fashion

Today, dressing in comfortable, breathable fabrics that allow freedom of movement seems like a no-brainer. But back in the day, it wasn’t so simple. Men have the bicycle to thank for much of their comfortable clothing. It helped phase out tight, narrow jackets, shoes, and frock coats, making sportswear a distinct fashion trend.

At first, men—aristocrats and wealthy industrialists—wore their everyday clothing for bicycle rides. Bowler hats, heavy woolen frock coats, pants, and shoes made up the cycling outfit of the 19th century. But as bicycles improved and speeds increased, it became clear that this attire wasn’t practical for cycling.

Soon, the high top hat was replaced by a cap, long frock coats gave way to short jackets, pants became looser, and shoes lost their heels, gaining laces. Plus, two pockets were added to the waistband: one for a watch and the other for small coins. The comfort was a hit, and this clothing soon spread beyond sports fields and bicycle paths, becoming a staple in every man’s wardrobe.

Bicycle owners started demanding more from their outfits: clothing had to be comfortable, durable, well-ventilated, and non-restrictive. Designers and couturiers quickly adapted, modifying cuts, fabrics, and styles to modernize the men’s suit.

Modernity and Sporty Style

The main fashion trend of 2023 is all about comfort and practicality, with sporty style at its peak. In the 2023 men’s fashion shows, almost all brands presented sports outfits, many incorporating retro elements such as track jackets, piping, and vintage fabrics.
