Arnold Schwarzenegger: “I Wasn’t Born with Acting Talent”
In an exclusive interview with “City of Women,” Arnold Schwarzenegger opened up about his iconic roles, his journey to stardom, and the challenges of aging in Hollywood. He shared insights into his return to acting after serving as California’s governor and how he achieved global fame despite not having natural acting talent.
The Return to Acting After Politics
Schwarzenegger is one of the few actors who transitioned from a successful acting career to politics and then back to acting. He admitted having doubts about returning to the film industry after serving seven years as California’s governor. However, he compared it to riding a bike after a long break—once you learn, you never forget.
“I had no issues returning to the set. In fact, my time as governor taught me invaluable lessons and provided experiences that have enriched my acting,” Schwarzenegger said. He believes that any additional life experience benefits an actor in creating compelling characters.
Reuniting with the Terminator
The Terminator is one of Schwarzenegger’s most beloved characters, alongside Conan the Barbarian and Julius Benedict. He expressed gratitude to James Cameron for creating the role and insisting that he play it. “The Terminator franchise has been incredibly significant in my career,” he noted.
Schwarzenegger praised the franchise’s innovation, highlighting how the first film, despite budget constraints, introduced a groundbreaking villain who became both a legendary antagonist and hero. He attributed this success to the Terminator being a machine, which allowed audiences to accept its actions without complete disdain.
The Impact of Aging on Physical Abilities
At 74, Schwarzenegger candidly discussed the challenges of aging. “Aging is not easy. It’s tough to see your body change when you were once known as Mr. Universe or Mr. Olympia,” he admitted. Despite maintaining a rigorous daily workout routine approved by his doctors, he acknowledged the difficulties of maintaining muscle mass as testosterone levels decline.
He also mentioned health issues, such as heart disease, which runs in his family. “When you’re offered a role in an action movie, you push yourself even harder. You have to decide what you can and cannot do,” he said. “But you’re the Terminator, so you train like crazy.”
The Power of Mental Strength and Visualization
Schwarzenegger attributed his success to mental strength and visualization. “I never saw myself as just a strongman. My achievements in bodybuilding and acting came from my determination and ability to visualize my goals,” he explained. He emphasized the importance of setting goals and working tirelessly to achieve them, even without natural talent.
“I wasn’t born with acting talent. I came to Hollywood because of my physique and my idol, Reg Park, who also acted. I took English and acting lessons, worked on my accent, and did everything to improve,” he shared.
The Future of the Terminator
When asked about the future of the Terminator franchise, Schwarzenegger joked, “In every Terminator movie, I die! But somehow, the writers always find a way to bring me back.” He expressed his willingness to return if the opportunity arises, depending on the success of the previous film.
