Bill Murray, known for his roles in Hollywood, grew up in a large, supportive family in Wilmette, Illinois. With eight siblings, Murray’s family life was lively and close-knit, with some siblings even appearing in his films. From sharing a love for golf to supporting his sister’s religious life, let’s explore Bill Murray’s siblings and his role as a dedicated brother.

Edward Murray III (1944)

The eldest Murray brother, Ed, inspired Bill’s hit sports comedy Caddyshack (1980). Ed passed away in 2020 at the age of 76. A statement from the Murray brothers’ golf apparel company, William Murray Golf, revealed that Ed received a golf caddie scholarship in 1963, a storyline included in the film’s script by another brother, Brian Doyle-Murray.

Brian Doyle-Murray (1945)

Former Saturday Night Live writer and performer Brian Doyle-Murray has appeared in numerous films with his younger brother Bill, including Scrooged (1988) and Groundhog Day (1993). The brothers hosted their own show, Bill Murray & Brian Doyle-Murray’s Extra Innings, in 2017. Brian has been married to veterinarian Christina Stauffer since 2000.

John Murray (1954)

John Murray is known for his role as Bill’s on-screen brother in Scrooged (1988) and appearances in films like Elf (2003). In a 1985 interview with the Los Angeles Times, John joked about comparisons to his brother, saying, “When some of my friends see Billy, they say, ‘You must be John Murray’s brother!’ I always thank them for that.”

Nancy Murray (1958)

Bill’s sister Nancy is a performer and a Dominican nun. She has brought her one-woman show, chronicling the life of St. Catherine of Siena, to the stage. Bill has shown his support by attending her performances in New York and Massachusetts.

Andy Murray (1960)

Andy Murray is a professional chef known for his Florida-based restaurant, Murray Bros. Caddyshack, and his cookbook Eat, Drink, and Be Murray (2022). In the book, Andy shared a unique family recipe: peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches, a childhood favorite among the Murray siblings.

Joel Murray (1963)

Joel Murray has also appeared in Scrooged (1988) and has built his own Hollywood career with roles in Mad Men (2007–2014). He is set to star in the upcoming biographical sports film Madden (2026).
