May 21, 2024 Update: A Ray of Hope in a Dark Time

There’s encouraging news to share: the community kitchen has served an estimated 4,700 people in a single day. This remarkable achievement included cooking 10 large pots of lentils, ensuring that displaced families and those in dire need received a hot, nourishing meal. The kitchen is currently providing support to:

While this is a reason to celebrate, the challenges remain overwhelming. Due to the closure of major crossings, cooking gas is unavailable, forcing the kitchen to rely on firewood stoves. This method is not only time-consuming but also requires significant effort to gather the necessary wood, adding another layer of difficulty for the already exhausted staff.

April 10, 2024 Update: The Struggle to Keep the Kitchen Running

Six months into this devastating conflict, the grief and fear for the people of Gaza are overwhelming. Over 34,000 lives have been lost, and the recent tragic deaths of World Central Kitchen (WCK) staff serve as a stark reminder that no one is safe in a warzone. To date, more than 200 humanitarian aid workers have been killed in Gaza.

The meals provided by WCK and other organizations have been a lifeline for the people of Gaza. However, WCK’s pause in operations has created a massive gap in aid, leaving half of Gaza’s 2.2 million residents facing catastrophic hunger. WCK had been a key partner in supporting the community kitchen we fund in Rafah refugee camp, operated by our local partner, Wefaq.

The Short of It: The Kitchen Is Still Open

Despite the immense challenges, Wefaq’s community kitchen remains operational. Staff are using stored supplies—beans, lentils, rice, and oil—donated by WCK to prepare hot meals for women and their families. These supplies are expected to last for a few more weeks.

The Long of It: An Uphill Battle

Wefaq is also using your donations to purchase fresh vegetables and spices from local markets. However, the cost of these essentials has skyrocketed due to shortages and high demand. To bridge the gap left by WCK’s pause, Wefaq is working with other partners to bring in shelf-stable food through various checkpoints.

The risks are enormous, but the determination of Wefaq’s staff to serve their community is unshakable. They are committed to continuing their work for as long as they can, no matter the obstacles.
