6 Months of War: The Human Toll in Gaza, West Bank & Israel – Stories of Resilience and Hope
The Heartbreaking Reality After Six Months of Conflict
Six months into one of the most devastating conflicts of our time, I returned from a two-week journey through Palestine, where I met with partners, survivors, and aid workers across the West Bank and Israel. The stories I heard were not just tales of suffering—they were testaments to unbreakable resilience, shared grief, and an unyielding hope for peace.
The Human Cost: Voices from the Ground
What struck me most was the universal plea for an end to the violence. Every person I spoke with carried the weight of the war in Gaza, even as they grappled with their own hardships in the West Bank. Palestinians there described rising sexual violence, harassment at checkpoints, and the inability to work or access basic necessities. Yet, their first thought was always for Gaza.
Women calling our mental health hotlines would often cut their conversations short, insisting the counselors’ time be saved for those in Gaza, whom they believed were enduring even greater suffering. It’s a powerful display of compassion, but the truth is that pain knows no borders in this region. The trauma is widespread, and the need for support is urgent.
Economic and Social Collapse in the West Bank
The war’s economic impact on the West Bank has been catastrophic. Women face escalating threats at checkpoints, making it nearly impossible to travel for work or essential errands. No one is permitted to cross into Israel for employment, leaving families without income. The restrictions have also fueled a disturbing rise in physical and sexual violence, further destabilizing communities already trapped in a cycle of despair.
Yet, even in the face of these challenges, our partners refuse to give up. When given the rare chance to travel, they reach out to the most isolated women, offering encouragement, food vouchers, or direct aid to help them survive. Their dedication is a beacon of hope in a time of darkness.
Solidarity Across Divides in Israel
My visit also took me into Israel, where I met with feminist organizations working tirelessly to combat violence against women. What stood out was their ability to unite women across divides—Jewish Israelis, Palestinian Israelis, and others—in a shared mission of solidarity. They understand that peace and a shared future can only be built when women stand together, regardless of their backgrounds.
Our partners in Israel shared their own heartbreak over the events in Gaza. They spoke of their fears for the future, the deep pain caused by the October 7th attacks, and their hopes for the safe return of hostages. Their voices were a reminder that this conflict has touched every corner of the region, leaving no one untouched.
A Call for Ceasefire and Lasting Support
Witnessing the heartache and bravery of the women in this region firsthand has only strengthened my resolve. While the United Nations’ resolution for an immediate ceasefire must be implemented to allow lifesaving aid to reach those in need and ensure the safe release of all hostages, our work on the ground cannot stop there.
Our focus remains on providing emergency support in Gaza and contributing to long-term rebuilding efforts across the region. With the expertise of our local staff, partners, and the unwavering support of the global community, we are committed to helping women rebuild their lives, families, and communities.
