Unlocking Your Child’s Genius Potential with Mental Arithmetic
Unlocking Your Child’s Genius Potential with Mental Arithmetic
Imagine your child reciting poetry, doing squats, and solving complex arithmetic problems simultaneously. With mental arithmetic, this could be your reality. As a mother of an energetic boy, I was intrigued by this method and decided to learn more. Oksana Kolos, the director of the SMARTUM mental arithmetic school, answered my questions.
What is Mental Arithmetic?
Mental arithmetic is the ancient art of performing calculations in your head. Originating in China over 2000 years ago with the invention of the abacus, this method has evolved into a powerful tool for cognitive development. Children learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using an imaginary Japanese abacus, which is similar to traditional counting tools but represents numbers through specific bead positions rather than quantity.
The Science Behind Mental Arithmetic
Using the abacus engages both hands, stimulating both hemispheres of the brain. Initially, children work with physical abacuses, but as they progress, they visualize the tool in their minds. This method is taught in 52 countries, including China, Japan, the USA, Canada, and the UK. SMARTUM has branches in 27 cities across Belarus.
The SMARTUM curriculum combines five different international methodologies, including Japanese, Indian, American, and Turkish techniques. Vladimir Feday, the founder, was inspired by a video of children performing rapid mental calculations and traveled to several countries to study and adapt the best practices for the post-Soviet region.
Physiological Benefits
Mental arithmetic strengthens neural connections between brain hemispheres. The abacus image is stored in the right hemisphere (responsible for visual thinking), while numbers are processed in the left hemisphere (responsible for logic and precision). This simultaneous engagement enhances cognitive abilities, leading to faster thinking, improved problem-solving skills, and increased creativity.
Building a Foundation for Success
The mental arithmetic course aims to develop intellectual abilities, laying a strong foundation for future success. Children can perform rapid calculations, but the benefits extend beyond math. The program enhances:
- Concentration and focus
- Photographic memory
- Speed and accuracy of reactions
- Self-confidence
- Creative thinking
- Listening skills and observance
- Imagination and visualization
- Academic performance
Class Structure
Classes at SMARTUM are divided into three age groups: younger (4-6 years), middle (7-11 years), and older (12-16 years), with no more than 10 children per group. Each session lasts two lessons and is held once a week. Daily home practice of 15 minutes is essential for progress. The school provides all necessary materials, including access to an online training platform.
Can Adults Learn Mental Arithmetic?
Yes, adults can learn mental arithmetic through an adapted three-month program. The first adult groups have already started their training.
