Conquering New Heights: Anna Poltorzhitskaya’s Inspiring Elbrus Ascent
Anna Poltorzhitskaya: A Journey of Courage and Determination
Anna Poltorzhitskaya, a mother of two, a devoted wife, and an incredibly brave individual, recently achieved a remarkable feat by conquering Mount Elbrus. In an exclusive interview, Anna shares her motivations, the challenges she faced, and the profound impact this journey has had on her life.
The Decision to Climb
Anna’s life, while active and fulfilling, took a turn when she decided to step out of her comfort zone. With the support of her family, she embarked on a journey to conquer one of the world’s most challenging peaks. This adventure was not just about reaching the summit; it was a personal quest to prove something to herself, to break free from the mundane, and to escape the constant barrage of news and internet connectivity.
Preparation and Training
Anna’s preparation for the climb began when she saw an announcement from the I-RUN running club, led by Alexander Bazulka, about an upcoming Elbrus expedition. The initial organizational meeting in February introduced the team to their guide, Vladimir Klepatsky, who was responsible for organizing the alpine training and the ascent.
The training sessions, held in the forest area of Raubichi, were grueling. The group consisted mainly of professional athletes and seasoned marathon runners. Despite the physical demands and her initial doubts, Anna persevered, driven by her determination to achieve her goal. She also worked with an experienced trainer, Andrey Borodushkin, to strengthen her knees and core, addressing her primary concern of not being able to complete the climb due to an old injury.
The Ascent: Challenges and Triumphs
The climb itself was a test of willpower and endurance. The northern route chosen by Anna’s group is known for its beauty and minimal signs of civilization. Unlike the more popular southern route, there were no cable cars or snowcats to assist with luggage or provide rescue services. The journey began with a challenging ride in the dark, followed by a treacherous crossing of a precarious bridge, all illuminated only by headlamps.
Carrying a 25 kg backpack, Anna had to carefully monitor each step to avoid falling. The physical strain was immense, but the breathtaking surroundings and the support of her team kept her going. The male members of the group carried the bulk of the shared equipment, with their backpacks weighing between 30-40 kg. The women, in turn, boosted morale with delicious meals and words of encouragement.
Overcoming Adversity
The climb was not without its surprises. Unstable weather conditions, including rain, snow, and strong winds, added to the challenges. Despite these hardships, the team remained resilient. Anna recalls the words of their guide, “It takes great courage to help someone who is struggling, even when you are facing your own difficulties.” This sentiment resonated deeply with Anna, who witnessed the strength and unity of her team firsthand.
Although Anna fell short of the summit by just 28 meters, she is determined to return and complete the climb. The experience has left an indelible mark on her, fueling her passion for mountaineering and travel.
Future Plans
Anna’s love for the mountains has only grown stronger. She now sees the world through a different lens, with her thoughts and plans revolving around mountaineering and exploration. Her next adventure might be closer to home, with a newfound interest in exploring the beauty of Belarus. Anna’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone, and the profound impact such experiences can have on one’s life.
