Top Heartwarming Christmas Movies to Brighten Your Holiday Season
As the winter holidays approach, there’s nothing quite like snuggling up with a warm blanket and watching heartwarming Christmas movies. These films, filled with hope, love, and a touch of magic, capture the essence of the season. Together with the video service VOKA, we’ve compiled a list of atmospheric films perfect for the holiday season.
The Man Who Invented Christmas
This film, inspired by Les Standiford’s book of the same name, tells the story of how Charles Dickens came to write “A Christmas Carol.” In the mid-19th century, Christmas was not as widely celebrated as holidays like Easter. However, in the rural areas where Dickens grew up, Christmas was cherished. In 1843, facing financial difficulties due to poor sales of his previous novel, “Martin Chuzzlewit,” Dickens decided to write a heartwarming tale about Christmas.
Although many publishers rejected his manuscript, Dickens published it himself. “A Christmas Carol” became a classic and significantly influenced readers, helping to make Christmas one of the most important holidays for many.
From “Miracle on 34th Street” to “The Irony of Fate”
Dickens’ idea that Christmas is not just a holiday but a significant personal event and a time when everything changes for the better quickly spread to all areas of life, including cinema. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, several films were made that are now considered Christmas classics. It’s hard to imagine the winter holidays in any English-speaking country without “It’s a Wonderful Life” or “Miracle on 34th Street.”
In our country, the films of Eldar Ryazanov, who also sought to capture the magic of Christmas, are particularly popular. We rewatch “The Irony of Fate” and “Carnival Night” time and time again.
The Boy Who Saved Christmas
Any Christmas movie can be described with the same words: heartwarming, touching, inspiring, bright, filled with love, and belief in the best. Over time, many screenwriters began creating stories that appeal to both adults and children. One such film is the popular 1990s movie “The Boy Who Saved Christmas,” where a young schoolboy, Jeremy, sends an email to Santa Claus. Santa is thrilled to have a computer and the ability to receive letters from children quickly. However, due to a technical glitch, important information is lost, and Santa’s evil brother tries to ruin the holiday. Of course, it’s up to Jeremy to save Christmas.
Love Actually
The Christmas movie genre truly came into its own in the early 2000s with the release of the British romantic comedy “Love Actually.” This film explores how love governs everyone’s lives, from the Prime Minister falling for his employee to a writer escaping to southern France to mend his broken heart.
The Holiday
After “Love Actually” set a new standard for Christmas movies, the genre evolved to include multiple storylines and micro-plots. A prime example is “The Holiday,” where an English journalist, Iris, and a successful advertising executive from Los Angeles, Amanda, swap homes for Christmas. One story unfolds in sunny California, while the other takes place in the snow-covered English countryside. Both stories, of course, end with a happy ending, as is fitting for a true Christmas movie.
