Unraveling Passions: An Engrossing Look at Chloe Lane’s Newest Masterpiece
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Florida, USA, New Zealand author Chloe Lane explores the complex psychology behind a woman’s compelling urge to disrupt a life of comfort and contentment.
The Paradox of Desire
At times, we achieve what we yearn for, yet an insatiable longing for something more persists. What fuels this intense desire to discard it all? In Chloe Lane’s second novel, Arms & Legs, Georgie Beard grapples with her infidelity, questioning why she strays instead of cherishing her life with her husband, Dan, and their son.
Life in the Wild: Florida
Georgie and Dan, both New Zealanders, have relocated to Florida, a place where “nature always finds a way in,” to escape the mundane life they witnessed others succumb to in the suburbs of New Zealand. Florida is far from tranquil, teeming with alligators, coyotes, and spiders as large as your hand. Despite Georgie’s fears, she thrives on pushing her boundaries, which might explain her attraction to Jason, the librarian who conducts the Music and Movement toddler class she attends weekly with her son. Perhaps it’s her fascination with touching the festering wound, testing the limits of pain, that propels her towards actions she knows she should avoid.
Lane’s Literary Prowess
Lane’s previous novel, The Swimmers, had a narrower focus—a young woman assisting her terminally ill mother in ending her life on their family land in Northland. Yet, Lane’s signature precision in crafting scenes brimming with tension remains consistent. When Georgie and Dan arrive at a friend’s house for a dinner party and encounter unexpected guests, Lane masterfully amplifies the discomfort. When Georgie blurts out inappropriate comments to a student she teaches, Lane handles the moment with care and just the right amount of cringe. One of her greatest strengths as a writer is her unwavering gaze into the more challenging and distasteful aspects of human nature.
The Affair and the Alarm
Alongside her affair, Georgie participates in a prescribed burn of the Florida forest. Amidst this controlled chaos, she stumbles upon something gruesome—the decomposing body of a missing boy. The metaphor is stark: all bodies, and all things we love, eventually break down and leave us. Georgie’s maternal fear for her son is palpable: “Life could so easily go wrong… there were so many ways for it to do so, so you should take what you can get.”
Lane’s Connection to Florida
Lane pursued an MFA at the University of Florida, and her love for the place is evident—even for its less appealing aspects. She captures the rhythms of American language with uncanny precision, proving herself to be one of the new generation of literary fiction writers from Aotearoa to watch. We eagerly await her next work.
