The Most Bizarre Designer Bags You Won’t Believe Exist
From a moldy bread bag by Rommy de Bommy priced at $500 to a Balenciaga trash bag costing $1,790, or even a Louis Vuitton paint can for $2,360, we’ve curated a list of the most bizarre designer bags created in recent years and ranked them for you.
10th Place: The Pigeon and Frog Bags by JW Anderson
The pigeon bag gained fame when Carrie Bradshaw sported it in the second season of “And Just Like That.” This bag caused quite a stir, with some people criticizing it and others admiring it. Regardless, the number of searches for this bag on the Lyst platform surged by 488% within the first few days.
Those who purchased this masterpiece by Jonathan Anderson claim that this clutch brings an unimaginable amount of joy into their lives. “People who I’ve never seen smile before started grinning when they saw it,” and “This pigeon helped me through a breakup with the laughter it brought” are some of the comments from fashionistas. However, they also noted that it’s one of the most impractical bags they’ve ever owned.
The frog bag evokes a similar response. This summer, it enjoyed immense popularity, with many people happily shelling out €758 for this wonder-clutch.
9th Place: The CD Player Bag by Coperni
Coperni loves blending fashion and technology. Recently, the French brand released a bag that perfectly mimics the design of a Sony Walkman CD player from the early 2000s. The brand doesn’t hide this inspiration; the bag is aptly named the CD-PLAYER Swipe Bag. It features a mini-screen and a port for headphones and a charger. On the Coperni website, these bags are available in various colors for €590.
8th Place: The Sneaker Bag by Balenciaga
First, Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, appeared with this accessory at the Met Gala. Then, in 2021, the fashion house released the Balenciaga SneakerHead Medium bag. The bag is designed in a deconstructed sneaker style, combining mesh and faux leather. The price for this women’s Balenciaga bag was $2,290.
7th Place: The Paint Can Bag by Louis Vuitton
The first such bag in purple appeared at Paris Fashion Week in early 2022. This was the first show without the renowned designer Virgil Abloh, who passed away in November 2021. However, the idea for these bags belongs to him.
The model perfectly mimics a paint can, complete with a chromed metal handle. The “label” displays the founding date of the house, its address, and a warning: “Handle with care.” It comes with a leather strap so the bag can be carried over the shoulder. The inside of the bag is lined with microfiber in a matching color.
To everyone’s surprise, these men’s bags quickly transcended the runways. “Paint cans” in red, orange, green, yellow, and turquoise, priced at $2,360 each, flew off the shelves of Louis Vuitton stores and soon appeared on the secondary market with a markup.
6th Place: The Glass Bag by Coperni
Many consider this bag the top fashion accessory of 2022. It was first spotted at the Grammy Awards in the hands of two stars: Doja Cat and Tinashe. Later, billionaire Kylie Jenner was seen with it.
The bag is modeled after the popular Swipe design, which Coperni has been producing for years. However, the technology is quite different. Each glass bag took 3 hours to produce and then a day to cool. The home decor company Heven, which specializes in blown glass, assisted in their production. The bag weighs 2.9 kg and can break, but you can’t lose anything in it.
The price of the bags carried by the stars on the red carpet is unknown. Later, the brand started selling similar leather designs for €500.
5th Place: The Pillow Bag by JW Anderson
A perfect multifunctional bag! Spacious, comfortable—ideal for both sleeping and carrying your belongings. It recently debuted and has been well-received. It’s available in small and large sizes for €450 and €550, respectively.
4th Place: The Pastry Bags by Rommy de Bommy
Unlike the other designers mentioned in this article, Rommy de Bommy is a lesser-known designer from Rotterdam. Rommy, as the designer is called, is far from high fashion but is beloved by Instagram users.
Her pastry bags are immensely popular and sell like hotcakes! Although the average price for such an accessory is far from cheap: around €500.
3rd Place: The Trash Bag by Balenciaga
At the winter 2022 collection show, Balenciaga presented a new bag in the form of a trash bag. Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of Balenciaga, stated: “I couldn’t miss the opportunity to create the most expensive trash bag in the world. Who doesn’t love scandals in the fashion world?”
The bag was made from elastic calf leather, making it look very much like a plastic trash bag. The accessory comes in four colors: black, red and white, blue and black, and yellow and black. The model was aptly named the Trash Pouch and sold for $1,790.
2nd Place: The Chips Bag by Balenciaga
Once again, Demna Gvasalia and Balenciaga take the spotlight. It all started when Demna was spotted with a bag of Lay’s chips at an event. Then, at the October 2022 show, the world saw the Lay’s bag. True to form, it comes with a lock and is made of leather. Soon, it was available for purchase at $1,800. Interestingly, the bags came in different “flavors.” Some fashion enthusiasts joked about their disappointment that there wasn’t a crab and cheese flavor.
It’s known that after the scandal last year, Balenciaga has become much more cautious, and it’s unlikely that Demna will surprise us with something similar in the near future.
1st Place: The Microscopic Bag by MSCHF
The top spot in our ranking goes not to a fashion house but to a creative agency.
The employees of MSCHF weren’t indifferent to all the oddities of designers and released what is perhaps the most unusual bag. In response to the shrinking designer bags that lack utility and functionality, they created a microscopic bag. It looks like a glowing speck of dust and can fit through the eye of a needle. Its size is 657 x 222 x 700.
However, this bag (if it can be called that) is a complete replica of the Louis Vuitton OnTheGo bag. And if you happen to have a microscope in your normal bag and look at the MSCHF creation with it, you’ll see a perfectly ordinary bag and even make out the Louis Vuitton monogram.
The bag was sold at an online auction by rapper Pharrell Williams’ Just Phriends for $63,750. That’s almost 20 times the cost of a real Louis Vuitton OnTheGo bag.
