State Standards Reveal Hazardous Children’s Products

Over the past week, the State Standards Committee has published a list of unsafe children’s products on their Telegram channel. These products pose serious risks, including choking hazards and potential injuries. Additionally, popular candies were found to contain an unusual vegetable juice that is not typically used in juice production.

Dangerous Toys and Candies

Children’s Toy: Wind-up Crib Carousel by Umka, Article ZY403028-R-D1

This product does not comply with the safety requirements of the Customs Union Technical Regulation TR TS 008/2011 “On the Safety of Toys” (clause 3.2, article 4). The toy and its components, including fastening parts, must withstand mechanical loads during normal use without breaking and must retain their consumer properties. Moreover, they must not pose a choking risk to children. During tensile testing (applying a load of 90 N), the cord attaching the suspended toy to the carousel tore, creating separate parts (plastic balls) that completely fit into the small parts cylinder. When the plastic balls were impact tested, they broke into parts, each of which also fit entirely into the small parts cylinder.

Children’s Toy: “Suspension” for Children Aged 3 Months and Up, Article C301-3

The toy and its components must withstand mechanical loads during normal use without breaking and must retain their consumer properties. They must also eliminate the risk of choking. When a load of 90 N was applied during tensile testing, the cord broke, creating separate parts that completely fit into the small parts cylinder.

This product does not comply with the safety requirements of the Customs Union Technical Regulation TR TS 008/2011 “On the Safety of Toys” (clause 3.2, article 4). The toy and its components must withstand mechanical loads during normal use without breaking and must retain their consumer properties. During drop testing, the toys broke, creating cracks, sharp edges, and accessible sharp points.

Chewy Candy “Chupa Chups” “Marmalade Pizza” with Banana, Strawberry, Apple, Raspberry, Blackberry, and Orange Flavors

This product does not meet the safety requirements of the Customs Union Technical Regulations TR TS 021/2011 “On the Safety of Food Products” (clause 1, article 5, chapter 1; clause 1, article 7, chapter 2; clause 1, article 13, chapter 3) and TR TS 023/2011 “Technical Regulation on Juice Products from Fruits and Vegetables” (clauses 1, 17, article 2; clause 32, article 5; Appendix 2). The product was manufactured using concentrated radish juice, which is not permitted for use in juice production.

The “equivalent sound level” hygiene safety indicator exceeds the norm. The norm is no more than 75 dBA for toys intended for outdoor play, but this toy’s indicator is 82 dBA.

Children’s Laundry Detergent “Wirek”

The manufacturer of the detergent intentionally indicated that the product is “for washing in automatic washing machines.” However, these detergents cannot be used as washing agents with regulated foaming for front-loading washing machines. The “foaming ability” indicator, with a norm of no more than 180 mm, is (196±5) mm. Exceeding the “foaming ability” indicator misleads consumers about the product’s purpose, quality, and safety and does not exclude the risk of safe use of the detergent in front-loading washing machines. Additionally, the product does not meet the mandatory requirements of the Republic of Belarus State Standard 32479-2013 “Detergents. General Technical Conditions” (clause 3.1.5), which the product is declared to comply with, in terms of the “washing ability” indicator. The indicator, with a norm of at least 60%, is (46.3±1.9)%.
