Sophie Steevens’ Path to Wellness Through a Plant-Based Diet

Sophie Steevens, a renowned author, faced a lifetime of medication and aggressive treatment for an autoimmune disorder. She was determined to find a better path to wellness. Here’s her inspiring journey.

Early Influences and Dietary Shifts

Growing up in New Zealand’s predominantly meat and dairy-based food culture, Sophie was fortunate to have vegetarian parents. They instilled in her an awareness of the health benefits of whole foods and organic produce. However, when her parents separated at around six years old, Sophie began to introduce meat into her diet, following the behavior of those around her.

The Downhill Spiral

Sophie’s teenage years saw a decline in her healthy eating habits. She became addicted to sugar, dairy, and copious amounts of black tea and coffee. Despite giving birth to her two sons, Eli and Milo, which reignited some of her childhood health awareness, her sugar addiction persisted.

A Conscious Choice

At the age of 25, Sophie had a revelation. The thought of eating a dead bird repulsed her, and she made a conscious choice to never touch meat again. Her partner, Ricardo, and her boys soon followed suit and became vegetarians.

A New Adventure and Unexpected Challenges

The family decided to move to Bali, Indonesia, for Ricardo’s surfing career and a new experience for the boys. However, Sophie suddenly fell extremely ill with typhoid fever, a life-threatening bacterial infection. She was also diagnosed with a severe kidney infection, as well as throat and ear infections.

A Turning Point

During her recovery, Sophie noticed unusual symptoms and knew something wasn’t right. She flew home to New Zealand and was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid gland to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormone.

The Search for Answers

Sophie was given the standard course of treatment, but she knew she needed to make significant changes to manage her disease. She began her health journey, researching avidly, cleaning up her diet, and working with both a naturopath and other healthcare professionals.

Embracing a Plant-Based Lifestyle

Sophie’s journey led her to embrace a plant-based lifestyle. She found that this way of eating not only helped her manage her Graves’ disease but also improved her overall health and well-being. Her story is a testament to the power of diet and lifestyle changes in managing chronic health conditions.
