Single on Valentine’s Day? Make It Your Best Night Yet!

While everyone else is rushing to dates and posting photos of gifts, you might feel alone and unsure of what to do amidst all the hearts and love around. Here are some tips to make your evening not just bearable, but truly enjoyable.

Stay Off Instagram

Today, your feed will be filled with flowers and hearts captioned “Love.” No one will mention their lack of intimacy or how a bouquet was an apology for forgetting Valentine’s Day. Today, everyone is happy online. After a few romantic posts and stories, you might find yourself on the kitchen floor, eating sweets and feeling sorry for yourself. Why put yourself through that? Exactly—there’s no need.

Invite Single Friends Over

Men come and go, but beloved friends stay. Remember your promise to “meet more often” from your last conversation? Today is the perfect day to keep that promise. You even have a reason: in Finland, today is Friendship Day.

Go on a Date… With Yourself

At the end of the day, the most important person in your life is you. Since everyone is confessing their love today, why not confess your love to yourself? Write down 100 reasons why you love yourself, from your cute freckles to your stellar performance as a “Snowflake” in kindergarten. Plan a romantic evening for yourself. Have dinner by candlelight, listen to music, relax in a bath, and buy yourself a gift. Take it seriously. What kind of celebration would you throw for the most beloved person in your life? What gift would you give to someone who always takes care of you and is always there for you? That person is you. Don’t let yourself down today.

Watch a Movie

If intrusive thoughts keep creeping in, distract yourself with a movie. But avoid romantic melodramas. Watch something ironic and funny instead, like “What We Do in the Shadows,” “We’re the Millers,” or “Meet the Parents.” Don’t forget the classic “Sex and the City” and its sequel “And Just Like That.” The characters in this series don’t always have luck in love, but that doesn’t stop them from living life to the fullest.

Fill Your Day with Meaning

Do something you’ve never had time for. Finally, organize that shelf, make a doctor’s appointment, or find out how to become a volunteer. By the way, February 14th is also International Book Giving Day. It’s a great opportunity to visit your local library and donate a couple of unused novels gathering dust on your shelf.

Dream a Little

Imagine your loved one. What are they like? What do they love? How do you spend time together? And apart? Some women realize after this exercise that they dream not of a passionate hunk, but of a kind friend who might be sitting in the next office.

But don’t stop there. What are you like with your loved one? How has your life changed? What’s stopping you from becoming that person and living that life now?

Do Nothing

Actually, this holiday was invented by someone else. You don’t have to listen to them. In reality, it’s just another day in February, nothing more. Remember, happiness and relationships are not synonyms, and you’re not alone in your solitude: millions of people are alone today too.
