In the traditionally male-dominated cruise industry, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo has made waves as the first female CEO of a major cruise line, Celebrity Cruises. Her journey to the top is a testament to her resilience, adaptability, and leadership.
The Early Days
Lutoff-Perlo’s career in the cruise industry began over three decades ago. She started in the sales department of Royal Caribbean Cruises, with dreams of leading the department. However, her career path took an unexpected turn when her supervisor, Dan Hanrahan, moved her to the marketing department.
“I was shattered,” she recalls. “I thought my career was over.” Little did she know, this was a pivotal moment that would ultimately lead her to the CEO position.
The Path to Leadership
Hanrahan saw Lutoff-Perlo’s potential and wanted her to gain experience in different parts of the organization. She took full advantage of this opportunity, rising swiftly through the ranks over the next 12 years. She served as senior vice president of hotel operations, then executive vice president of operations, before being appointed as president and CEO in December 2014.
“That experience taught me not to think about my path as linear,” says Lutoff-Perlo. “Your best career move is probably one when you don’t take a linear path, because you learn so much more.”
Breaking Barriers
Lutoff-Perlo’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She has had to combat misconceptions about women’s capabilities in the male-dominated ship industry. However, her success has proven that women can indeed lead and excel in this field.
As CEO, Lutoff-Perlo oversees various aspects of the cruise line, from hotel operations and the onboard experience to shipbuilding and marine regulations. She is currently leading Celebrity in Project Edge, the creation of two new ships for its premium line.
The Modern Cruise Experience
Under Lutoff-Perlo’s leadership, Celebrity Cruises has continued to thrive and innovate. The cruise line offers a “modern luxury” experience, with voyages to all seven continents and a focus on experiential, destination-oriented travel.
“Cruising is much different today than when I began in the industry,” says Lutoff-Perlo. “People want so much more out of the cruise experience. They want to vacation the way they live their lives, only better.”
Celebrity Cruises has also been recognized for its excellence, ranking as the No. 1 premium cruise line in the Travel Weekly Readers Choice Awards for the last seven years in a row.
Looking Ahead
As for the future, Lutoff-Perlo is excited about the continued growth and evolution of the cruise industry. She is committed to leading Celebrity Cruises to new heights and inspiring other women to reach for the C-suite.
“We need to learn to reach high,” she says. “Frequently, as women, we don’t picture ourselves in the C-suite. I was guilty of that. But we can do it. We can lead. We can succeed.”
