Revamp Your Decor: Turn Old Pillowcases into Trendy Cushion Covers

Discover how to breathe new life into old pillowcases by transforming them into vibrant, on-trend cushion covers. This eco-friendly project is not only fun but also a great way to add a personal touch to your home decor.

Materials Needed

  • Old pillowcase
  • Cushion inner
  • Paper and pencil
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Removable tape
  • Paintbrushes
  • Fabric paint in various colors

Step-by-Step Guide

Preparing the Pillowcase

Turn the pillowcase inside out and place the cushion inner on top, aligning one edge of the cushion with the opening end of the pillowcase. Draw a line on the pillowcase to match the size of the cushion, ensuring the pillowcase opening is retained. Sew along the line and cut off the excess fabric. Turn the pillowcase right side out and iron it before starting the painting process.

Leaf Design

For each pillowcase, place a piece of card inside before starting to prevent the paint from bleeding through to the back. Draw and cut out tropical leaf shapes. Lay them on top of the cushion cover to create a pleasing composition with some overlapping. Trace the leaves with a pencil and begin filling in each leaf with fabric paint. Use a variety of colors for a vibrant look.

Ensure each leaf is completely dry before painting the next one. Use the darkest shade for the overlapping layers to create depth. Once all the leaves are painted and dry, trace around one of the larger leaves and paint just the outline with a contrasting color to add interest to the design.

Terrazzo Design

Use removable tape to create random triangular and polygon shapes. Tear the tape to create interesting edges for a more authentic look. Paint inside the taped areas with fabric paint. Ensure each color is completely dry before removing the tape and adding the next lot of shapes.

Aim to scatter the colors and shapes for a balanced mix. Leave some spaces where the fabric shows through to cover any marks on the pillowcase. Finish with a dark color to overlap the other colors and complete the terrazzo effect.

Face Design

Paint a group of organic-looking circular shapes using various colors. Once dry, use a pencil to draw a continuous line drawing of a woman’s face. Search online for “minimal line art” for inspiration. Use a fine paintbrush to paint over the pencil line with black fabric paint to create a striking face design.
