Polish Activists Rally Against Total Abortion Ban: A Fight for Women’s Rights
Polish Activists Rally Against Total Abortion Ban
On October 1st, mass rallies swept through Warsaw, Krakow, and Lodz as Polish activists voiced their opposition to a proposed total ban on abortions. These demonstrations are set to continue, with similar protests planned in 12 other Polish cities on October 3rd. According to RT, Polish citizens, including medical professionals, argue that such a law would devastate thousands of lives.
The Current State of Abortion Laws in Poland
Poland currently enforces the strictest abortion laws in Europe, a legislation that has been in place since 1993. Statistics reveal that around a thousand Polish women terminate their pregnancies annually, excluding clandestine operations. As it stands, abortion in Poland is only permitted in cases of rape, incest, or severe fetal abnormalities that could harm both the fetus and the mother.
Activists and Medical Professionals Speak Out
Kacper Pluta, secretary of the Socialist Alternative movement, condemns the proposed total ban on abortions as a form of degradation and barbarism against women. Pluta warns that the new law could lead to criminal penalties for women seeking abortions abroad, forcing rape victims to either carry their pregnancies to term or face imprisonment. He likens this regression to the times of the Inquisition.
Dr. Marek Bydgosz, a gynecologist, shares Pluta’s concerns. He argues that the new law would jeopardize women’s health, as doctors would have to wait until a patient’s condition becomes life-threatening before intervening. This delay could result in substandard care and countless ruined lives.
