Michael Fassbender: Exploring Sexual Addiction, Madness, and Dance
Michael Fassbender: A Modern Enigma
Michael Fassbender is undoubtedly one of the most enigmatic and talented actors of our time. His captivating appearance exudes a unique blend of simplicity and deviance. Natural sexuality and charisma intertwine with intensity and madness, traits that Fassbender neither denies nor shies away from. Instead, he takes pride in his ability to portray genuine emotions, no matter how raw or complex they may be.
Early Beginnings
Born in Germany to a German father and an Irish mother, Fassbender spent his formative years in Ireland. Like many renowned actors, he began his career at a school of theatrical arts. He enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London but found himself on a real film set long before graduation. Fassbender recalls that after his first significant contract, he left school, feeling he had gained enough knowledge to navigate the adult world.
‘As graduation approached, my classmates grew increasingly nervous and irritable. The atmosphere was toxic, and I couldn’t bear it. I had a falling out with everyone and left. I decided I had enough knowledge to live as an adult. And that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.’
Today, Michael Fassbender is a global star, working alongside actors like Charlize Theron and Marion Cotillard, and directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, and Ridley Scott. He believes that Hollywood life isn’t for everyone and acknowledges the industry’s obsession with vanity and money.
Hollywood’s Harsh Realities
Fassbender notes that talent alone isn’t enough to succeed in the film industry; one’s appearance plays a crucial role. This focus on looks can fuel vanity, a trait he observes in himself and others. He sees how the expectation of an Oscar nomination can inflate egos, turning the pursuit of awards into a hunger for validation rather than a celebration of artistry. Fassbender strives to suppress this hunger within himself.
However, Fassbender’s appearance aligns well with Hollywood’s standards, complementing the depth and versatility of the characters he portrays.
Madness and Sexual Addiction
The films Fassbender chooses to act in are far from mainstream. His characters offer an intimate glimpse into worlds that many actors fear to explore. Fassbender is meticulous about the authenticity of his roles. When playing a madman, he immerses himself completely in the state, leaving no room for half-measures. He believes that anything less than full commitment would be unbelievable.
Fassbender is known for baring not just his body but also his fears, emotions, and the intricate workings of his psyche. In an interview with Marie Claire, he shared his thoughts on the film ‘Shame’:
‘I think the audience also found it challenging to watch my character turn his life inside out. It’s a very intimate film, not just because of the sex, but because of how open the character is to the viewer, how deeply you can see into his soul. My goal was to play as honestly as possible. I studied sexual addiction, met with people suffering from this mania, and saw how their entire lives revolved around sex—how much, how often, and with whom.’
He continued, ‘This character in the film isn’t pretending; he’s a real psychopath. So, I had to play it in a way that showed I was completely mad, not half-mad or a quarter-mad. Any addiction is an escape from dealing with oneself and the problems of the surrounding world. And in cinema, everyone is so modest; the problem of sexual addiction has been rarely explored before us.’
Indeed, ‘Shame’ is one of the most emotionally challenging films since ‘Requiem for a Dream.’ The physical nudity underscores the character’s emotional vulnerability and his attempts to understand his own feelings.
Passions and Interests
In life, Fassbender is as contradictory as he is on screen. He is unapologetic about his emotions, boldly pursuing what he believes in, and indifferent to gossip. He defies typical actor clichés and has a keen interest in racing and music. In his youth, he dreamed of becoming a heavy metal guitarist but eventually chose acting. His parents were initially concerned about his career choices but were reassured by his early success.
Beyond extreme music, Fassbender has a love for speed. Like Keanu Reeves, he enjoys the thrill of riding motorcycles.
‘I love motorcycles and go-karting. Emotionally, go-karting is very close to Formula 1 racing, but without the risk of crashing. I enjoy the feeling of being close to the ground, which you don’t get in a regular car. I love the sensation of speed, the movement on the turns, although it’s incomparable to what Formula 1 drivers experience. Riding a motorcycle is also an unusual way to relax. You focus on speed, on going as fast as possible, and your mind shifts to this, making all the unpleasantries disappear.’
As a creative soul who values authenticity in his passions and emotions, Fassbender also loves to dance.
‘I consider dance to be a kind of therapy that helps get rid of everything unnecessary. I love to dance, always have, and I also consider singing to be therapy. It’s good for the soul and the body!’
