Long-Lasting Makeup: Tips to Make It Stay All Day
A flawless makeup application is not just about technique; it’s also about longevity. If your makeup loses its freshness after a few hours, it’s time to identify the cause. It could be due to low-quality cosmetics, improper application, poor skin condition, or skipping essential preparatory steps.
The Crucial Step: Preparing Your Skin
Maintaining your skin’s health is vital as it serves as the foundation for your makeup. The first and most important step is to prepare your face for long-lasting makeup. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and flakiness, ensuring a smoother application. A good base is key to perfect makeup. Choose a scrub suitable for your skin type. If you have oily skin, opt for an abrasive scrub with larger particles. For dry skin, a gentler and more soothing scrub is better. Remember, if you have any inflammations, avoid using a scrub to prevent spreading infection and further skin irritation. After exfoliation, use a hydrating mask. Intensive treatments like sheet masks and hydrogel eye patches work excellently. Follow up with your skincare routine: toner, serum, moisturizer, and eye cream. These steps will leave your skin smooth and nourished, allowing your makeup to apply evenly and last longer.
Foundation
Once your skincare has absorbed, apply a primer. A mattifying primer works well for most skin types, except for dehydrated skin, where a hydrating base is more suitable. Apply the primer with a brush. The same goes for your foundation; use a brush or sponge (with a stippling motion) for application. If needed, use a concealer and corrector on your eyelids and lips.
Use cream textures for correction and adding color to your face, as they are quite long-lasting, especially when set with powder textures. Apply a cream contour under your cheekbones and around the perimeter of your face. Then, apply a highlighter on the prominent areas (cheekbones, bridge of the nose) and blush on the apples of your cheeks. Set everything with powder to fix the liquid textures. Don’t forget to powder your eyelids.
Eyes
Start with an eye primer applied to both the mobile and fixed eyelids. Here are a couple of tips to make your eye makeup last longer:
- First, take a cream eyeshadow in the same shade as the powder eyeshadow you plan to use (or a light/neutral shade matching your skin tone). Set it with powder eyeshadow, and your eye makeup will stay put!
- Second, if you’re using a pencil, apply it to your mobile eyelid and blend it with a brush. Then, apply powder eyeshadow on top. This will make the color last longer and appear more intense.
Use a waterproof mascara to prevent smudging and running. However, it’s not recommended for daily use.
Brows
Use long-lasting textures for your brows, such as brow pomades, which won’t smudge throughout the day. Set your brows with a brow gel to keep the hairs in place and maintain the shape for a long time. You can choose either a tinted gel or a clear one.
Lips
As mentioned earlier, we’ve covered the lips with foundation. This neutralizes the natural pigment and helps the lipstick color appear truer. It’s essential to choose a long-lasting texture. Currently, liquid matte lipsticks are among the best options. However, keep in mind that they can be challenging to touch up during the day and don’t layer well.
If your lips feel sticky, lightly dust them with translucent powder. This won’t necessarily prolong the wear, but it will certainly help keep you comfortable.
Setting Your Makeup
You’ll need a makeup setting spray. Hold the bottle at arm’s length and mist it over your face. The key is not to add unnecessary moisture to your makeup. This spray can also help revive your skin under heavy powder textures.
By following these rules, your makeup will last much longer. Remember the three pillars of perfect makeup: well-prepared skin, correctly chosen textures, and a good setting spray.
