Inside Parris Goebel’s Colorful and Inspiring Los Angeles Home

World-renowned choreographer and music video director Parris Goebel has crafted a home in Los Angeles that is as vibrant and full of life as her dance routines. Known for her expressive and energetic performances, Parris has brought that same passion into her home decor, creating a space that truly reflects her spirit and energy.

A Reflection of Energy and Spirit

Originally from Auckland and now based in Los Angeles, Parris Goebel has designed a home that is a true reflection of her personality. “I feel like my house is a reflection of my energy and my spirit,” she says. “The way I decorate my home is a form of art.”

For Parris, her home is a sanctuary where she can relax and feel at peace. “The minute I dance, the minute I move, all my worries, all my insecurities, they leave me instantly. It’s a similar feeling when I walk into my house,” she explains.

A Kaleidoscope of Colors

The living areas of Parris’s home are filled with a collection of vibrant, mostly vintage pieces in sorbet colors. A standout feature is a technicolor rug that covers part of the hardwood floor. “It makes me feel alive and makes me feel happy,” Parris says of her decor. “That was really important when I was looking for pieces for my house – things that made me feel joy, because, for me, that’s what I want to feel when I’m at home.”

Finding the Perfect Home

Parris wasn’t actively looking to move, but her love for browsing housing apps led her to discover a mid-century modern home in a quiet Van Nuys neighborhood. “I’m always looking at houses for no reason. And then this place popped up,” she recalls. “I checked it out, loved it, and then made it my home.”

The four-bedroom home features a free-flowing kitchen, dining, and lounge area, with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and French doors that open onto a pool. It’s a dream come true for any house hunter.

A World of Creativity

Parris’s home is a testament to her creative genius. “You can’t help but feel comfortable and inspired and happy when you’re in a space that is created by you,” she says. Many of her showstopping furniture finds have moved with her from her previous home in Sherman Oaks.

“When you’re traveling so much, you’re in hotel rooms and you don’t really find a home. So when I moved to LA and finally got my own place, I was just really excited,” Parris shares. “I kind of went crazy and took the opportunity to pick out things that I loved.”

Influences and Design Philosophy

Parris’s love for interiors is influenced by her mother, LeeAnn, who was particular about choosing furniture and color palettes for their family home. “Growing up, the dining table was always such a masterpiece,” Parris recalls, describing how her mother would thematically set the table at Christmas.

Parris’s design philosophy is all about breaking the rules and following her instincts. “I feel like there are no rules,” she says. “It’s whatever makes sense to you. That’s why I find it fun.”

Creating a Safe and Inspiring Space

Parris believes that interior design is about creating a safe space where you can be yourself. “I feel comfortable in this space that is an extension of my soul. I can walk into my lounge and it feels like my world,” she explains.

One of the best decisions Parris made was not putting a TV in her lounge. Instead, the living area is a place to relax with friends, sit by the fire, and listen to her record player. She’s started collecting vinyl and is drawn to the golden eras of music, with doo-wop, jazz, and blues on repeat.

Celebrating Women

Parris has decided to only display art depicting women in her home. “It’s this constant reminder of how amazing and beautiful and strong we are,” she says. “And I also feel, when other women come into my space, that they kind of feel that energy as well. It’s about celebrating ourselves.”

Like her choreography style, Parris’s home is eclectic and energizing. “It’s just a perfect representation of who I am as a person and as an artist as well,” she says.

Empowering Women Through Dance

Empowering women is a theme that runs through Parris’s career. In 2020, she became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to dance. With her sisters Kendal and Narelle in Aotearoa, she runs Sisters United, which provides creative workshops for young women to learn life skills and self-expression.

Parris is close to her family and visits them in Auckland as often as she can. Other than her collection of female-charged artworks, the only photos on display are of her family. She recently framed a photo of her mother with her father Brett (who is also her manager) as a young couple.

Continuous Evolution

Parris’s passion for interior decorating never sleeps. She enjoys playing with the colors of her cushions, throws, candles, and centerpieces to keep things interesting. “I get bored a lot, so I’m always trying to change things around. I love that it’s easy to transform your place as well. I feel like I’m just getting started,” she says.

At 17, Parris opened her successful hip-hop dance school, The Palace Dance Studio, in Penrose, Auckland. She has since worked with superstars like Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna, choreographing sensational performances. As with all of Parris’s forms of expression, her dance is a fusion of different styles and personal experiences.

Next, Parris is delving into the world of TV and film, directing a film adaptation of her 2013 stage show Murder on the Dance Floor for Sony Pictures. She is also involved in several other exciting projects that she is keeping under wraps for now.

Despite her busy schedule, Parris finds solace in her home. “It’s interesting because that’s how I feel when I dance. People underestimate the power of interior design in creating a safe space for yourself because it can immediately release tension. It can immediately make me happy. That’s why I’m also so passionate about it,” she concludes.
