Successful Launch of the Austro-Belarusian Art Project ‘Music and Light’

The National Center for Contemporary Arts has successfully launched a large-scale Austro-Belarusian art project titled ‘Music and Light,’ featuring diverse works from 25 artists. The exhibition showcases pieces where sound and light vibrations create deep, emotionally rich, and sensory associations, reflecting the aesthetic traditions of both Austrian and Belarusian cultures. Within the colorful spaces, one can ‘hear’ the music of various composers, mirroring life’s contrasting parts and episodes.

Meet the Curators

Hubert Turnhofer

Hubert Turnhofer, the Austrian curator, is the director of Kunstraum Gallery, a public relations manager, and an art writer. His journey into the art world began 30 years ago in Moscow, where he met a group of nonconformist artists, including Nikolai Postnikov. This experience deeply influenced him, leading him to become part of the international art scene and eventually open his own art space. Hubert’s gallery features works from Austrian, Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian artists, as well as some Italian and German pieces. He does not limit himself to specific styles or genres, offering a wide range of aesthetic views to his audience.

Elena Tsagelskaya

Elena Tsagelskaya, the Belarusian curator, is the director of the Art Projects Studio ‘GruviOn,’ a member of the Belarusian Union of Cinematographers, and a producer and director. Her interest in European art and its parallels with Belarusian culture led her to study curatorial projects in Germany and Austria. Elena’s vision for the ‘Music and Light’ project was to create a harmonious and cohesive exhibition that showcases the interplay of different energies and their transformation into artistic expressions.

The Birth of ‘Music and Light’

The idea for the exhibition’s title, ‘Music and Light,’ came spontaneously. Hubert and Elena collaborated to create a concept that would bring together the diverse works of the artists involved. The exhibition aims to show how the experience of sound can transform into a complete artistic image and how the impression of light, containing the entire spectrum of colors, can be reborn into a single harmony of sounds.

The Importance of Diversity, Freedom, and Independent Thinking

Hubert Turnhofer emphasizes the importance of diversity, freedom, and independent thinking in life and art. The exhibition ‘Music and Light’ reflects a wide range of emotions, contrasting moods, and whimsical images, all united by the principles of unity, creation, and harmony. The preparation for this exhibition took a year, and its launch coincides with the opening of the art season, which the curators see as a positive sign.

Philosophical Perspective on Art

Hubert’s background in philosophy allows him to view art from a unique perspective. As a gallerist, he continuously learns and evolves, bringing a deep and multifaceted understanding to his work. His gallery is not just a space for exhibitions but also a cultural hub where musical and poetic evenings take place, reflecting his belief that art is primarily about taste and soul.
