How to Travel on a Budget: The 3 Essentials You Need to Know

Learn everything about planning your next adventure as a traveler on a low budget, whether you’re traveling solo or with friends or family.

The First Essential for Traveling on a Budget: Accommodation

If you’re like me, you dream of traveling the world and sharing experiences with new people. You want to visit exotic places, make new friends, and see things few have ever seen. Traveling the world on a budget is a fantastic opportunity.

When I started my travels in January 2016, I had no idea how much I would save in my first year. I knew nothing about budgets, savings, or travel insurance. I didn’t know how much money I needed to save each month or what kind of insurance was right for me (it turns out that most travelers need specific coverage).

Traveling on a budget has its perks:

  • You’ll stop worrying about your finances.
  • You’ll have more time for yourself.
  • You’ll spend time with friends and family rather than worrying about making more money.
  • You’ll meet other travelers and share stories.
  • You’ll feel less lonely when you’re away from home, reducing stress.

The Second Essential for Traveling on a Budget: Food

There’s an old saying: “If you want to travel cheaply, get a cheap airline. If you want to travel cheaply, book a luxury hotel.” This is both true and untrue. Cheap airlines often fly direct to your destination for less than commercial airliners. However, it’s still worth booking a nice hotel room or a flight on a cheap airline to see the sights in any of the world’s 100+ countries.

The debate around this issue has taken many forms over the years. Some people think that saving money by booking directly from an airline will yield more value, even though it might cost more. Others believe that paying for luxury accommodation and dining will deliver more value.

When thinking about traveling on a budget, consider both sides of the equation. There’s no straightforward answer to who gets what in terms of value out of each type of trip. They all have different traits, so what works for one person may not work for someone else.

I aim for journeys with flexibility, willing to pay for flights with layovers and overnight stays in hotels without high expectations. After investigating all my options, I decide which one strikes me as the most valuable and worth paying the total price for.

The Third Essential for Traveling on a Budget: Transportation

We’ve all heard the phrase: “You only get one life, so live it well.” This applies to travel too. Traveling is not only about discovering new places but also about connecting with people from all walks of life who share your interests and passions.

Avoid using cheap or free services if possible. Instead, use local services for short rides. They are often cheaper, offer more rides per unit cost, and can accommodate larger groups quickly.

For longer journeys that require public transport, look for services that allow you to book directly into their app before arriving at your destination. This way, you can track your journey in real-time and save money.

If you can afford it, consider using a car rental service like Thrifty. Everything is taken care of for you, and you don’t have to worry about parking fees or anything else until you arrive at your destination.
