Childhood and Inspirations
Who was your childhood role model?
Glenda Jackson – an absolute powerhouse. She’s an incredible actor who takes no prisoners. She stepped away from acting to become a Labour MP in the UK for 23 years, but returned to the theatre at the age of 82 to play King Lear, which is regarded as one of the most challenging roles ever written.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I dreamed of being an actor, a surgeon, or an aerialist. Turns out, I only had the skills for one of those!
Favorites
What’s your favorite Disney movie and why?
The Jungle Book. What’s not to love? Bagheera, the wise protector, Baloo, the lovable buffoon, and the terrifying Shere Khan… and let’s not forget the songs! “The Bear Necessities” was the clincher for me.
Who are your favorite writers?
I adore Jeannette Winterson for her cleverness and directness. David Mitchell is another favorite; he weaves characters, places, and incidents slyly from one novel into another. And, of course, Trent Dalton – Boy Swallows Universe is a heartbreaking yet uplifting first novel. I also enjoyed All Our Shimmering Skies.
Last movie you watched?
I’ve seen four varied movies recently: Promising Young Woman, Minari, Nomadland, and The Father. Anthony Hopkins’ performance in The Father was absolutely stunning.
If you could have any animal as a pet, which would you choose?
I would definitely have three pandas. Who wouldn’t want that?
What song can you listen to on repeat and never get sick of?
I’ve had Reb Fountain’s “Don’t You Know Who I Am” on rotate for the last three months. She’s a glorious artist and a true wordsmith.
Hobbies and Relaxation
Favorite board game or card game?
Codenames. It’s so much fun, requires lateral thinking, and is very stressful—plus, it doesn’t involve numbers, which suits me fine. I’ve also just started learning Mahjong from my very astute mother-in-law, Bev.
What’s your favorite thing to do to relax?
I love going for big walks in the bush or by the sea, often with music playing. Every time, I’m rewarded by nature’s incredible ability to fill me with appreciation, wonder, and gratitude.
