The coronavirus lockdowns brought us numerous hits, including Normal People, The Queen’s Gambit, and Staged. However, one standout series was ITV’s Quiz. Originally aired in 2020, this three-part series has been hailed as a ‘lockdown gem.’ If you missed it the first time, you now have another chance to watch it on Netflix, where it has recently been added.
The Real-Life Story Behind Quiz
The series is based on the true story of Major Charles Ingram, who appeared on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001. Charles won the jackpot but was later accused of cheating. The drama explores the events surrounding his controversial victory and the subsequent trial.
From Stage to Screen
Originally a play written by James Graham, Quiz premiered in 2017 and moved to the West End in 2018 before being adapted for television. This transition from stage to screen has allowed a broader audience to enjoy this captivating story.
The Scandal Unfolded
Suspicion arose when Charles struggled in the initial rounds but then sailed through to win the jackpot. Producers became suspicious when Charles seemed to consider incorrect answers before choosing the correct ones. Although no incriminating devices were found on him, the sound of coughing during correct answers led to further investigation.
The coughing was traced back to Charles’ wife, Diana, and another contestant, Tecwen Whittock. The trio was charged with deception and found guilty in a 2003 trial. They received suspended sentences and fines, but they continue to maintain their innocence.
Critical Acclaim and Fan Reactions
Quiz has received widespread acclaim. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian praised the drama for becoming as addictive as the quiz show itself. Flora Carr of The Radio Times highlighted its relevance in today’s world of fake news and press harassment.
Fans have also expressed their enjoyment of the series. One viewer noted, ‘It’s a big compliment when you feel you want another episode. Quiz does that. It engages throughout with a mostly tight story, a mostly good cast, and what we all love: a bit of a mystery.’ Another fan praised the acting, particularly Michael Sheen’s portrayal of Chris Tarrant, calling it ‘top notch.’
