Discover Corfu’s Hidden Gem: A Luxurious Retreat with Breathtaking Views
As I glided over the Ionian Sea, nearing the end of a surprisingly quick flight, I couldn’t help but fall in love with Corfu from a thousand feet above. The island’s lush green landscape, surrounded by the bluest waves imaginable, sparkled like a sea of sapphires. It’s no wonder Corfu is a top choice for those seeking a luxurious holiday in southeastern Europe. Known as Greece’s greenest island, Corfu’s beauty is a point of pride for its locals, who attribute it to the island’s higher precipitation during the cool season.
The Hotel at First Glance
My home for a short stay was the Alkyna Lifestyle Beach Resort, part of the Ella Resorts collection. This adults-only property, located on the west side of the island in Agios Gordios, opened its doors in the summer after a thoughtful repurposing. The entrance alone was stunning, with wooden panels, an infinity water feature, and lush greenery creating a perfect photo opportunity. The minimalist interior theme continued throughout the hotel, leading to a terrace with a breathtaking panoramic sea view.
The Rooms
The rooms at Alkyna blend modernity with classic elements. Large clay pots, earthy colors, and a generously-sized, comfortable bed define the decor. The spa-like stone bathroom was spacious and calming. I stayed in a Junior Suite, which had direct access to a swim-up pool, perfect for a morning swim or a late afternoon dip in my private suntrap. Although the pool is shared with a few other suites, I often had it to myself, adding to the sense of exclusivity and luxury.
The Food
Despite having multiple dietary requirements, I was impressed by Alkyna’s fantastic menu. The main restaurant, COCŪRA, serves breakfast, buffet lunches, and hearty dinners. The food was genuinely brilliant, with every dish looking appealing and tasting delicious. I also tried their other two restaurants, Nafs and Lucάta. The latter is a sublime Italian restaurant where I enjoyed sensational linguine with prawns and a succulent fish fillet, accompanied by a crisp rose and a breathtaking orange sunset. Nafs was equally delightful, with a frozen margherita and a risotto dish that might just be the best I’ve ever had. And of course, no trip to Corfu would be complete without indulging in multiple Greek salads, complete with unspeakably good feta and authentic extra virgin olive oil.
Wellness at Alkyna
Speaking of health, a trip to The Governor Olive Oil tasting experience is a must. There, you’ll learn about Corfu’s history with olive oil creation and its significant cultural importance. Olive oil is not only a must for enhancing the flavor of our food but also for our health, as it is full of polyphenols that are said to reduce inflammation and stave off chronic diseases.
