Early Beginnings and Career Shift

Roberts’ journey began in Chicago, where she initially aspired to become a dentist due to her fascination with teeth. However, her path took a turn during college when she switched her major from biology to accounting. This decision led her to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, known for its rigorous accounting program.

First Steps into the Business World

Roberts’ first foray into the business world was not a conventional job but rather a summer activity at her aunt’s corner grocery store in Pittsburgh. At just 11 years old, she took inventory and managed the store, developing a love for business and customer interaction. This early experience instilled in her the importance of processes, procedures, and accuracy.

Joining McDonald’s

After college, Roberts worked briefly in the steel industry before joining McDonald’s in 1990. Initially hesitant about working for a fast-food company, she was impressed by the diverse accounting departments and the opportunities for career growth. Her research revealed that McDonald’s was a land of opportunity, and she eagerly accepted a position.

Learning the Ropes

In 2004, Roberts joined McDonald’s Accelerated Operations Program, which allowed her to rotate through various operational roles. She started as a crew member, then became a shift manager, and eventually a restaurant manager. This hands-on experience taught her valuable lessons in management, strategy, and community engagement.

Rising to the Top

Today, Roberts serves as the zone president for the eastern United States at McDonald’s, overseeing approximately 5,600 stores and half of the company’s US business. She is a highly accountable leader, focused on delivering results and developing talent within the organization.

Roberts is an active member of McDonald’s Women’s Leadership Network, which promotes diversity and inclusion within the company. She emphasizes the importance of having a supportive work environment where employees can share their challenges and victories.
