Davina McCall’s Journey to a Balanced Life: Embracing a Four-Day Work Week
Davina McCall, a renowned television personality, has recently opened up about her decision to transition to a four-day work week. This change comes after two significant health scares that forced her to reevaluate her lifestyle and prioritize her well-being.
Confronting Health Challenges
Davina McCall, aged 58, has been a staple on British television since the early 1990s. Her career has spanned decades, with notable appearances on shows like Big Brother and The Masked Singer. However, her journey has not been without its challenges. In 2024, Davina was diagnosed with a brain tumor, followed by a breast cancer diagnosis in 2025. These health scares served as a wake-up call, prompting her to make substantial changes in her life.
“Change is something that all my life, I spent running away from,” Davina admitted on the Miss Me? podcast. “I absolutely hated it. Change was something that really frightened me. I always loved the status quo, knowing what I was doing and feeling safe in that.”
The Importance of Change and Self-Care
Davina’s health struggles have led her to realize the importance of change and self-care. “What has happened, actually, is that I have realized that all my really big growth has come from change – and often quite painful change,” she shared. This realization has been pivotal in her decision to reduce her workweek to four days.
“I’m going to work a four-day week,” Davina announced. “I feel so much better now about my life and trying to get it more balanced. So now, really, as I hit this stage of my life, I want to take more care of myself. That is my latest project: me, because I can’t take care of anyone else if I’m not okay.”
The Impact of Stress on Health
Davina’s decision to de-stress her life is supported by experts who emphasize the importance of balance. Life coach Mhairi Todd notes that constant stress can have detrimental effects on both mental and physical health. “When stress becomes constant, the nervous system never fully switches off,” Todd explains. “Prioritizing balance isn’t indulgent; it’s a way of interrupting that chronic ‘always on’ state, allowing the body and mind to come out of survival mode and into something far more sustainable.”
Benefits of a Four-Day Work Week
Working four days a week can have numerous benefits. According to Todd, it can reduce burnout and decision fatigue, leading to better sleep, improved energy, and enhanced immunity. “Interestingly, many people find they’re actually more focused and productive, because rest isn’t the opposite of work, it’s what makes productive work possible,” she adds.
However, it’s crucial to use the extra time wisely. Life coach Hattie MacAndrews advises, “If you are realistically able to get your work done in four working days, and you use your extra fifth day wisely, then it’s a brilliant idea. However, you have to weigh up how the extra pressure to get everything done during those four days will impact you.”
Davina’s Journey to Wellness
Davina’s journey to wellness has been marked by significant milestones. After a six-hour operation to remove a 14mm growth in her brain, she faced another challenge with breast cancer. Following a successful lumpectomy and preventative radiotherapy, Davina has emerged stronger and more determined to prioritize her health.
Her story serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the importance of self-care and the need to balance work and personal life. As Davina continues to navigate her career and personal life, her decision to embrace a four-day work week stands as a testament to her resilience and commitment to well-being.
