A Fresh Start with a New Surname

David Tennant and his wife Georgia Moffett are starting the new year with a significant change. The couple, married for 14 years, have decided to adopt a new surname for their business ventures. This change, however, is not as straightforward as it seems.

The Story Behind the Surname

Few people know that David Tennant’s birth surname was McDonald. He adopted ‘Tennant’ as his stage name early in his career. Georgia, on the other hand, has often been referenced by her maiden surname even after their marriage in 2011. According to the Daily Mail, the couple have formally adopted ‘Tennant’ as their surname for their business, Sandyboy Limited, with the change officially taking effect on New Year’s Day.

Their Journey Together

The couple met on the set of Doctor Who in 2008, where Georgia played David’s on-screen daughter. Interestingly, Georgia’s father is actor Peter Davison, who played the fifth doctor from 1982 to 1984. David himself is renowned for his role as the tenth doctor from 2005 to 2010 and briefly returned as the fourteenth doctor in 2023.

Family Life

The couple are parents to five children: Ty, Olive, Wilfred, Doris, and Birdie. Their eldest daughter, Olive, is set to star alongside David in the next series of Rivals as Camilla Baddingham. The Disney+ adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s book is due to return later this year.

Previous Name Change

While the recent change pertains to their business, David previously indicated that they had changed their names by deed poll more than a decade ago. In 2023, he revealed that the decision applied to him, his wife, and their eldest two children.

The Reason Behind the Change

David first decided to change his name after finishing drama school when the UK actors’ union Equity informed him that a ‘David McDonald’ was already registered. The name ‘Tennant’ was inspired by an article about the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant. When David started receiving offers in America, he was told that a ‘David Tennant’ was already registered with the US-based Screen Actors Guild. To resolve this, he legally changed his name to ‘David Tennant’.

Family Name Change

Speaking at the 2023 New York Comic Con, David explained that he wanted to have a consistent name across the world. He decided to legally change his name to ‘Tennant’ and extended this change to his family. During a period when they were adopting his son Ty, expecting their daughter, and planning their marriage, the entire family became Tennants within a two-week period.
