Darragh Ennis from The Chase Clarifies Relationship with Co-Stars
Darragh Ennis, the renowned star of The Chase, has recently shared some fascinating insights into his relationship with his fellow Chasers. In an exclusive interview, the 45-year-old quiz master revealed some behind-the-scenes details that might surprise many viewers.
Filming Schedule and Misconceptions
Contrary to popular belief, the show is not filmed continuously but in blocks. This unique filming schedule means that the cast enjoys a significant amount of time off and doesn’t spend as much time together as fans might think. Darragh humorously noted, “We don’t see each other that much, but everyone thinks we live in a house together.” He even joked that he sees more of the production crew and the show’s host, Bradley Walsh, than his fellow Chasers.
Who is Darragh Ennis?
Darragh Ennis is a professional quizzer on ITV’s hit show, The Chase. He made history as the first former contestant to become a Chaser, defeating Paul Sinha in 2017 and impressing the producers enough to earn a permanent spot on the show.
Beyond his quizzing prowess, Darragh is also a neuroscientist. When he first joined the ITV program, he was working in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford. However, when his lab relocated from Oxford to Glasgow, he decided to focus solely on his television career.
Darragh’s Home Life
Darragh shares two children with his wife Joan, whom he met while studying at Maynooth University. In a touching interview on ITV’s Loose Women, Darragh opened up about the loss of his father to dementia. He revealed how he struggled to cope with the high-pressure environment of The Chase and was encouraged by producers to take time off and undergo counseling.
“I was broken inside and I didn’t realize,” Darragh explained. He described how he became unusually overwhelmed by the pressure during filming, something he had never experienced before. “On The Chase, there is a two-minute gap right at the end – the last thing we do is really, really high pressure, just by nature,” he said. “This time when I went to put my feet down, there was nothing underneath them. I just fell away. I weirdly got stressed and camera shy, which I never do. The pressure overwhelmed me completely.”
The Other Chasers
The Chase features a total of six Chasers, each with their unique personas. Darragh, known as “The Menace,” is joined by:
- Mark Labbett, aka “The Beast,” an original Chaser.
- Shaun Wallace, known as “The Dark Destroyer.”
- Anne Hegerty, who goes by “The Governess,” joined the series in 2010.
- Paul Sinha, “The Sinnerman,” who joined the following year.
- Jenny Ryan, “The Vixen,” the latest female addition to the series, having joined in 2015.
