Craft a Chic Breakfast Tray: Perfect for a Lovely Morning Surprise!
By upcycling an old picture frame and adding a touch of chalk paint, you can create a stunning breakfast tray to surprise your loved one. Here’s how to make it:
Materials Needed:
- Wooden picture frame (Choose a chunky one for best results and ample space for handles)
- MDF board (4.75mm thick)
- Resene FX Blackboard Paint
- Sandpaper block
- Resene testpots (see colors listed)
- Resene testpot brush
- Resene FX Paint Effects Medium
- Super glue
- Hammer and pin nails
- Pencil and ruler
- Drill and drill bit
- Two cabinet handles and screws
- Screwdriver
- Felt
- Scissors
Steps:
1. Prepare the Frame and Board
Start by removing the glass and backing from your picture frame. If your frame doesn’t have a wood backing, measure and cut a piece of MDF board to fit snugly into the frame where the glass was.
2. Paint the Board
Paint the board with two to three coats of Resene FX Blackboard Paint, allowing it to dry between coats. For a colored finish, Resene FX Chalkboard Paint comes in various colors, but we recommend the classic black for this project.
3. Sand and Paint the Frame
Sand your frame to remove any old paint and dust. Then, paint the front side and edges of the frame with two coats of Resene Undercover.
4. Create a Distressed Look
Once dry, mix 1 part Resene Jet Stream with 2 parts Resene FX Paint Effects Medium. Using a dry Resene testpot brush, lightly dip into the mix and brush long strokes to create a streaky effect. Avoid overloading your brush to achieve a distressed look. You can also use an old rag to rub back on areas for the desired effect. Set aside to dry.
5. Secure the Board
Super glue the inside edge of the frame and secure the blackboard backing piece, black side facing down. To make it extra secure, fold back the tabs that normally hold the glass in place, then hammer in pin nails along all the edges, between the tabs. Ensure the board is completely secure to hold the weight of beverages.
6. Attach the Handles
Measure and mark on the back side of the frame where your handles need to go, preferably centered on each side. Drill a hole all the way through the frame, large enough for the handle screws to fit. Using a screwdriver, fix your handles on tightly.
7. Add Felt Backing
Measure and cut a piece of felt as the backing to your serving tray. Super glue it in place. This will hide all the nails, tabs, and screws, and also creates a soft surface that won’t scratch or catch on anything.
8. Enjoy Your Creation
Now, go ahead and boil the kettle. Write a beautiful message for that special someone and enjoy your chic breakfast tray!
Resene Color Tips
Adjusting the ratios of Resene FX Paint Effects Medium and mixed color will create a variety of different effects. You can also make gift tags using Resene FX Blackboard Paint on cardboard.
