Brigitte Bardot’s Sole Son, Whom She Called Her ‘Tumor’, Wept at Her Funeral

Brigitte Bardot’s Final Farewell

On January 7th, the world bid adieu to a cinematic legend in Saint-Tropez, as Brigitte Bardot received her final applause. The actress passed away at the end of 2025, and ten days later, her body was laid to rest. Among the mourners, all eyes were searching for Nicolas-Jacques Charrier, Brigitte Bardot’s only son. Despite their tumultuous relationship, he found the strength to attend her funeral.

The Tragic Tale of Motherhood

Bardot’s journey into motherhood was far from the glittering success of her career. Instead, it was a tragic narrative filled with moments that left deep scars. At 25, the star of “And God Created Woman” found herself pregnant amidst her rising fame. Her passionate affair with actor Jacques Charrier led to an expected outcome, but while he was overjoyed, she was horrified.

Bardot hid from photographers, despising her changing body. She longed to return to work and even received an offer, but Charrier’s fury knew no bounds. In her memoirs, Bardot recalled how, in a fit of rage, Charrier pushed her so hard that she flew across the room. She yearned for freedom and eagerly awaited the day of delivery. Paparazzi camped outside her home, and Charrier, attempting to protect her, forbade her from leaving without a wig.

A Mother’s Regret

She transferred all her hatred, anger, and helplessness onto the small heart beating inside her. “I rejected my child! He was like a tumor, feeding off me, which I carried in my swollen body, and I longed for the blessed moment when I would finally be rid of it,” she wrote in her memoirs years later.

Nicolas-Jacques was born on January 11, 1960. However, Bardot’s maternal instinct never awakened. She hurried back to work a few days later and, during their divorce, declared in court that she would not fight for custody of her son. She needed care herself. Little Nicolas stayed with his father.

Failed Attempts at Reconciliation

There were timid attempts to mend their relationship, but each time they resulted in deeper wounds. Nicolas asked his mother for permission to stay for dinner, but she preferred to invite friends. He dreamed of walks in the park together, but she consistently chose her own life.

Looking back, in her scandalous memoirs “Initials B.B.”, she wrote that motherhood did not bring her happiness, “I would have preferred to give birth to a dog.” This phrase echoed around the world, and the offended son and ex-husband sued the actress for invasion of privacy, winning the case and receiving substantial compensation.

A Late Understanding

Nicolas did not invite his mother to his wedding and did not introduce her to his grandchildren. Only as Bardot aged did she begin to understand and acknowledge her mistakes, and despite everything, their relationship warmed slightly.

Shortly before her death, she mentioned that she communicated with her son a few times a year and knew her granddaughters, Anna Camille and Thea Josephine. The actress was introduced to her great-grandchildren, but genuine warm relationships never developed in the family. Too much precious time had been lost.

Bernard d’Ormale, Bardot’s husband, did much to reconcile Brigitte with her only son towards the end of her life or at least make these relationships a little warmer.
