Belarusian Designer Unites Women Worldwide to Craft the ‘PEACE Dress’: Join the Movement
Svetlana Bast, a designer from Minsk, is creating a ‘PEACE Dress’ with the goal of promoting unity and peace. Over 30 women from 12 countries have already participated in the project, contributing to a dress that now includes more than 1000 elements. You can still join this inspiring initiative.
The Birth of the ‘PEACE Dress’ Idea
The concept of the ‘PEACE Dress’ came to Svetlana Bast in November 2021. She vividly remembers the moment:
‘It was November 16th. I was sitting on a chair after finishing my meditation. Suddenly, this idea seemed to be implanted in my mind. It felt as if it wasn’t my own, but came from an external source,’ recalls Svetlana.
The idea was to unite people.
‘I wanted to show in a tangible form that we are all one. I wanted to combine our energies into a single dress. The sense of division was strongly felt in the world. But I am an active advocate of the belief that your success is my success, your joy is my joy, your pain is my pain…’ explains Svetlana.
A Global Collaboration
Svetlana called upon women from different countries via social media to knit circles following the same pattern, which she would then incorporate into the dress.
Throughout the winter, Svetlana collected knitted circles. On February 24th, she realized that the dress had taken on a new meaning—it had become a symbol of peace. The name she had chosen months earlier now seemed prophetic.
‘I felt goosebumps again. It was as if I had started making it in advance for a reason,’ she says.
To date, more than 1000 knitted circles have been sent to Svetlana by over thirty craftswomen from various corners of the globe: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Germany, Kazakhstan, Dagestan, Moldova, Georgia, Italy, France, Israel, and the Republic of Bashkortostan.
