How Ukrainian Women Are Turning Pain Into Power

As winter tightens its grip on Ukraine, Russian forces have escalated their assaults on the country’s energy grid, plunging millions into darkness—both literal and emotional. Yet, even in the coldest, most desperate moments, Ukrainian women like Anna Orel and her team at The Andreev Foundation are lighting the way forward for survivors of sexual violence, proving that resilience can outlast even the harshest of wars.

The Unyielding Fight for Survivors in a War-Torn Nation

From the dim glow of a basement shelter, Anna Orel speaks with quiet determination after a missile strike left her neighborhood without power. The relentless attacks have made her work harder than ever, but they haven’t stopped it. With electricity and heat in short supply, her team has adapted, transforming ambulances into mobile clinics to reach women cut off from traditional care. Partnering with organizations like Women for Women International, they deliver essential services—medical consultations, psychological support, and trauma counseling—to those who need it most.

Over the past three months, The Andreev Foundation’s psychologists have led 55 group counseling sessions in regions once under Russian occupation. Out of 845 participants, nearly half were children. Yet, only 20 survivors of sexual violence have come forward—eight of them minors. The foundation knows the real number is likely far higher. Fear keeps many silent: fear of Russian forces returning, fear of gossip, fear of judgment from their own communities.

Breaking the Silence: A Battle Against Stigma and Disinformation

The Andreev Foundation is working to change the narrative. Through crisis hotlines and group therapy, they’re giving survivors a safe space to speak out. As Anna puts it, “It’s hard to find victims of such violence because women who survived these horrors often stay silent. But through group sessions, we can identify and support them.” Their mission is twofold: to encourage survivors to seek help and to expose the brutal realities of Russian atrocities, pushing back against the tide of online disinformation that seeks to erase their stories.

Anna’s message is unshakable: “I don’t want other victims to remain silent. The world must know the truth. People in Ukraine are fighting for their future, for their children.” Her words echo the unbreakable spirit of a nation that refuses to be crushed.

Fueling Hope Through the Conflict Response Fund

In the heart of the crisis, the Conflict Response Fund (CRF) by Women for Women International is a lifeline. It supports local nonprofits in Ukraine and other war zones, ensuring that even amid active conflict, critical work can continue. For Anna, the stories she hears are both heartbreaking and inspiring. “On one hand, it’s devastating,” she admits, “but on the other, it motivates me to keep going. These women have survived rape, torture—they are families, they are children, and they continue to live on.”

Even in the pitch black of a power outage, she finds strength in the women she serves: “We are in a very difficult situation, but these women have the power to endure. Among this darkness, they have light in their hearts.”

A Global Call to Stand Together

Anna’s hope stretches far beyond Ukraine’s borders. “Women in this struggle are so brave, and our power is in our unity,” she says. “I hope we will achieve victory together—and by ‘we,’ I mean the whole world, because the world’s support truly matters to us.” Her words are a reminder that solidarity isn’t just a sentiment—it’s a force that can change the course of history.

At Women for Women International, stories like Anna’s and the women she serves are the driving force behind their mission. Their resilience, passion, and determination to reclaim their lives inspire action. As Anna and her team participate in global campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism in Kyiv, they send a powerful message: even in the darkest times, hope and unity can prevail.

Your support can make a difference. Donations help create safe spaces for rehabilitation, medical care, and psychological support for women survivors of war. Together, we can ensure that their light continues to shine—no matter how dark the night.
