Finding Strength in Support: Karina Kugel’s Journey

Over a year ago, Karina Kugel’s life took a tragic turn when her husband took the lives of their daughter and their dog before taking his own. Left alone and grappling with unimaginable grief, Karina found herself at a crossroads. Instead of succumbing to despair, she discovered a new purpose: helping others navigate the complex emotions of losing a loved one. This led her to create the project “Survive”.

The Birth of a Supportive Community

Six months after her daughter’s passing, Karina began engaging with other mothers on forums who had experienced similar tragedies. She noticed a disturbing trend: many of these women were contemplating suicide. Having grappled with such thoughts herself, Karina was determined to create a space where these mothers could find solace and support.

“I am convinced that if one intentionally ends their life, a reunion with our loved ones in the afterlife will not happen,” Karina shares. “I decided to unite these mothers, to prevent them from dwelling solely on their grief.”

Understanding the Depths of Grief

Karina believes that those who haven’t experienced the loss of a loved one cannot fully comprehend the depth of such pain. “We, with our tragedy, are not needed by anyone,” she says. “Acquaintances turn away, unwilling to confront the pain. And you simply find yourself on the sidelines of life.”

She describes life as a bustling highway, with people moving forward, raising children, and pursuing their goals. Meanwhile, those who have lost loved ones stand on the sidelines, feeling numb and disconnected.

Expanding the Scope of Support

Initially, Karina’s project focused on supporting mothers, but it soon evolved to include all women suffering from violence or struggling to leave toxic relationships. The project started with a chat group called “Survive,” where individuals could share their stories and find support.

“I myself lead a support group for teenagers with suicidal thoughts,” Karina explains. “These kids are amazing. You would never guess the weight they carry on their shoulders just by looking at them. That’s why it’s crucial to listen to them and understand them.”

A Community Beyond Psychology

Karina emphasizes that her project is not solely psychological. “It’s much broader,” she says. “The project aims to create an entire community where women and men can express themselves and receive the necessary support through shared experiences and close communication with others who have overcome similar challenges.”

“This is a place where you will be understood, supported, and not judged,” Karina adds. “We simply don’t have the energy for judgment, advice, or criticism, but we do have the energy to support.”

Future Plans and Aspirations

Looking ahead, Karina plans to open her own office, establish a 24/7 support hotline, and launch new support groups. She also aims to secure funding to launch advertising campaigns and take the project to the next level, reaching as many people as possible.
