Oleg Orlov: A Journey Through Art, Music, and Life
Oleg Orlov is a Belarusian artist, restorer, collector, and musician. His artistic journey began after experiencing clinical death in 1988. He created his own direction in painting, known as mistoessentialism. On October 24, Oleg Orlov will present his new concert program “Tales” at the Belgosfilarmonia.
The Musical Journey of Oleg Orlov
Oleg Orlov’s music is deeply rooted in melodicism, with lyrics that reflect profound poetry and the essence of life from birth to death. This philosophy is beautifully encapsulated in Gothic literature and music, which have resonated through the centuries. Despite their popular appeal, these genres carry a subconscious message that aligns with Orlov’s artistic vision.
Darkwave and Gothic Dance
Darkwave, or the dark wave, is a genre that embodies mystery, mysticism, and the Gothic style. Contrary to popular belief, Gothic music is not solely about dark sounds; it also encompasses dance music that originated in Germany in the 1970s. This genre, pioneered by electronic musicians, combines danceable rhythms with meaningful lyrics.
Orlov’s Unique Style
Orlov’s director, Dimma, along with other experts, listened to his compositions and concluded that they fit the darkwave genre. Orlov added Gothic dance to the mix, creating a unique blend of danceable music with a Gothic twist. Orlov’s commitment to originality is evident in his refusal to perform covers or remixes. He believes in the power of his own message and the responsibility he holds towards his audience.
Musical Influences and Inspirations
The first song that captivated Orlov was “Help!” by The Beatles, which he heard on a shortwave radio. This experience opened up a new world for him. He also draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, including Agata Kristi, Petr Mamonov, Korol i Shut, Grigory Leps, Mikhailov, Shnurov, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Modern Talking, Blutengel, and Rammstein. Among these, Modern Talking and Motorhead hold a special place in his heart for their melodic genius and pioneering contributions to heavy rock.
The Creative Process
Orlov’s artistic visions and musical compositions come to him as gifts from an informational field. After his clinical death experience, he began seeing vivid images that he translates into art. Similarly, his songs come to him fully formed, with lyrics and melodies that he quickly jots down. His distinctive style, characterized by black and burgundy hues, is a collaboration with his wife, reflecting their shared love for antiques and Gothic aesthetics.

The Secret to a Happy Marriage
Orlov attributes his successful marriage to the fact that both he and his wife, Tatyana, are creative and honest individuals. They share a deep interest in each other’s work and passions. Tatyana, a talented artist and restorer, complements Orlov’s love for the opulent and festive with her refined taste and sense of color.
Meeting His Soulmate
Orlov and Tatyana met in 1986 while studying at a technical school. They were both drawn to the school because of its high stipend. Their meeting was serendipitous, and they have been together for 38 years. Orlov credits their lasting love to their shared creativity and mutual respect.
