When asked about what attracted her to the project, Paltrow shared that the offer came at a pivotal moment in her life. With her children grown up and away at college, she found herself at a crossroads. “I felt like there was this huge chasm opening up in front of me,” she said. “I like to measure my life in chapters, and this was a completely new one.”

She saw Josh Safdie’s proposal as a divine intervention. Her brother, also a filmmaker, encouraged her to take on the role, praising Safdie’s talent. After watching “Uncut Gems,” Paltrow was impressed by Safdie’s bold and profound work. She met with him and found him to be a true artist, reminiscent of the directors she worked with early in her career.

Overcoming Nerves and Embracing the Challenge

Paltrow admitted to feeling nervous about returning to acting after such a long break. However, she saw the role as an opportunity to dive deep and challenge herself. “I was very excited when I got the offer,” she said. “I thought, ‘What the hell, I’ll go to New York and do this movie!”

Playing a theatrical actress was a full-circle moment for Paltrow, who began her career in theater. She drew on her mother’s advice and her own experiences to bring her character to life. Despite the poor quality of the play within the film, Paltrow found her groove and felt at home on stage.

To prepare for her role as a Hollywood diva, Paltrow subconsciously channeled a “dark version” of Grace Kelly. She saw parallels between Kelly’s sacrifice of her career for marriage and her character’s choices. “She gives up her freedom and her creative expression to not risk her marriage,” Paltrow explained.

She also highlighted the limited rights and freedoms women had in the 1950s, emphasizing how her character’s decisions were constrained by societal norms. Playing such a complex character was a thrilling challenge for Paltrow as an actress.

The Complex Dynamics with Marty

Paltrow believes her character wasn’t very significant to Marty, which she found interesting. She saw their relationship as a business partnership rather than a romance. “I think Marty needs her to feel alive again,” she said. “When she meets him in London, something wakes up in her.”

She described the film as a slow transition from amorality to understanding moral values. By the end, the characters achieve redemption and realize what truly matters in life. “I think when Marty looks back on this, he’ll know it was a special moment on his journey,” Paltrow shared.

Life in the 1950s vs. Today

Reflecting on the differences between the 1950s and today, Paltrow acknowledged that modern women have significantly more freedom and independence. She noted that while creative women in the past had some liberties, they were still constrained by societal rules and expectations.

Through her character Kay Stone, Paltrow explored the intersection of bohemian and high-society lifestyles, shedding light on the complexities and limitations women faced during that era.
