Margot Robbie: Unveiling the Truth Behind the Scandal

Get ready for the upcoming comedy “I, Tonya,” based on real events that shook the figure skating world over 20 years ago. The film delves into the infamous scandal involving American figure skater Tonya Harding, with Margot Robbie taking on the lead role. In this exclusive interview, Robbie shares her journey of portraying Harding, the challenges she faced, and her insights into the scandal that captivated the world.

From Ignorance to Intrigue: Robbie’s Initial Thoughts

“Honestly, I knew nothing about Tonya Harding or her story before I started working on the film,” Robbie admits. “I was around 4 years old when the scandal made international headlines. Plus, growing up in Australia, winter sports weren’t as popular as they are in America or Europe.”

Robbie was initially drawn to the script, which she read in one sitting, unaware that it was based on true events. “I was instantly captivated,” she recalls. “When I found out that the characters were real people, I knew I had to make this movie.” In a way, Robbie was glad she knew nothing about the story, as it allowed her to approach the role with a fresh perspective.

Discovering Tonya: A Journey of Empathy

As Robbie delved deeper into Tonya’s life, she uncovered a tale of resilience and determination. “Tonya had a tough childhood,” Robbie explains. “Her mother was incredibly controlling, both in her training and personal life, all in the name of making her a champion. And if that wasn’t enough, she ended up in an abusive marriage.”

Even in the figure skating world, Tonya faced constant disapproval and lack of support from her peers, coaches, and judges. She didn’t fit the aesthetic mold of the time, preferring rock music for her routines and often making her own costumes due to financial constraints. Despite these challenges, Tonya’s athleticism was unparalleled. Robbie gained a newfound appreciation for her achievements after training on the ice herself. “Tonya is one of only seven figure skaters in the world to have landed a triple axel in international competition,” Robbie marvels.

The Triple Axel: A Test of Skill and Strength

The triple axel is one of the most difficult jumps in figure skating, and it’s the only one performed with a forward motion. “It’s not just one rotation, but three and a half,” Robbie explains. “It’s incredibly challenging, and Tonya could do combinations with it. It’s a shame that her legacy is often overshadowed by the scandal rather than her accomplishments on the ice.”

From Novice to Skater: Robbie’s Training Journey

Robbie’s experience with figure skating before the film was limited to a few ice rink visits in London and some hockey games after moving to America. “But hockey is a completely different sport,” she clarifies. “The falls are less scary because of the protective gear. The skating technique is different, and even the skates are different. So, I essentially had no figure skating experience before this film.”

Robbie’s profession often requires her to learn new skills, and this role was no exception. “For ‘Focus,’ I took lessons from some of the world’s best pickpockets,” she recalls. “This time, I had to learn to skate at an Olympic level in just two months. It was daunting.”

Robbie’s training was intense, with hours of practice every day, five days a week. “Falls are incredibly painful in figure skating because there’s no protective gear,” she explains. “And you often fall from a height during jumps. After a week of training, I was bruised and could barely walk. But after a few weeks, I started to enjoy it. Now, I find myself missing the ice.”

Dubbed Performances and Newfound Respect

While Robbie had stunt doubles for the more complex skating sequences, she performed many of the routines herself. “I never managed to land a triple axel, or even a single one,” she laughs. “But I gained immense respect for the sport and the athletes who dedicate their lives to it. Behind the apparent ease on the ice lies incredible hard work, countless injuries, and an unwavering commitment to their goals.”

A Meeting with Tonya: A Moment of Connection

Robbie was eager to meet Tonya, not to mimic her, but to connect with her on a personal level. “Reading the script, I felt a genuine sympathy for her,” Robbie shares. “Not many people could have achieved what she did, given her circumstances. She’s certainly not weak.”

Robbie’s meeting with Tonya was a profound experience, further deepening her understanding of the figure skater’s journey. As viewers watch “I, Tonya,” they’ll witness Robbie’s powerful portrayal of a woman who defied the odds and left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating.
