Transform Your Old Containers into Stunning Planters & Propagation Stations!

Plant expert and stylist Hilton Carter shares his tips on giving old containers a new lease on life as beautiful planters and propagation stations. In today’s world, where sustainability is key, the ability to see potential in discarded items is crucial for our planet’s health. Upcycling, reusing, or repurposing – whatever you call it, finding creative ways to give items a second life is essential.

My Personal Style & Upcycling Journey

I’ve always had a penchant for blending vintage and modern styles in my space. While styling my home, I’ve tried to think of innovative ways to repurpose items that were gathering dust or destined for the trash. Here are some ideas to help you reuse items in your home or finds from thrift stores to create your indoor jungle.

Glassware: The Perfect Propagation Vessels

Every glass object I encounter has the potential to become a propagation vessel. All you need is a clean glass filled with water and a cutting from your favorite plant. Glassware comes in various shapes and sizes, from scientific beakers to beverage glasses, each with its unique beauty. Vintage bottles, with their painted or molded labels, add a touch of nostalgia to your space.

If vintage isn’t your style, you can still use your elegant glassware for propagation. For instance, I use champagne glasses as propagation vessels, adding a touch of class to my indoor jungle.

Tin Cans: Vintage Planters with Character

In the past, many goods came in tin cans, from coffee to crackers. These vintage tins can be found in thrift stores and make perfect planters. To use them as planters, create a drainage hole at the bottom or add a buffer zone with stones and horticultural charcoal.

Old cans stand out among other planters and showcase your sense of style through their labels. I’ve used a vintage beer can from a local brewery, which adds a touch of hometown pride to my collection.

Ceramic Vases or Mugs: Classy Planters

Ceramic items like bowls, cups, mugs, or vases can also be repurposed as planters. While they offer a clean and classy look, creating proper drainage can be challenging. To overcome this, create a drainage hole at the bottom or add a buffer zone with stones and horticultural charcoal.

I’ve used a vintage mug shaped like a lady in lingerie to pot my cactus, making it a statement piece in my indoor jungle.

Tips for Successful Upcycling

  • Ensure your containers are clean and free from any residues.
  • Choose plants that suit the size and shape of your upcycled containers.
  • Be creative with your displays, mixing and matching different container styles.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with various plant types and container combinations.

By upcycling old containers, you not only create unique planters but also contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. So, start exploring your home and local thrift stores for hidden treasures to transform into stunning planters and propagation stations.
