Blues Guitarist Midge Marsden on the Therapeutic Power of Music

Midge Marsden, a renowned jazz and blues musician known for his guitar and harmonica skills, shares his thoughts on how music can be like therapy. In 1996, he earned a Diploma in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi and has even taught ‘bluesology’ at the Waikato Institute of Technology. With decades of recording experience, Midge has a deep connection to music.

Music for Relaxation

When it comes to unwinding, Midge prefers instrumental music about 80 percent of the time. ‘It’s great because there are no voices demanding your attention,’ he says. He fondly recalls the era before The Beatles when instrumentals dominated the radio. ‘The Shadows’ greatest hits albums always take me back to that pivotal time between the late 50s and early 60s,’ he shares.

Midge also appreciates classical music, thanks to his mother’s influence. ‘Mozart is always a pleasure to listen to because it’s light and bright,’ he says. His musical journey began with Woody Guthrie, who played the harmonica, and later included Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, and Robert Johnson. ‘Robert Johnson is unique because his music is simple and direct, yet quite challenging to replicate,’ Midge explains.

Music as Therapy

Midge has always been open to various music genres, unlike many of his peers. He loves melodies and admires the work of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. ‘Their songs were easy-listening but had a great bossa nova beat,’ he says. Music has been a constant companion during tough times. ‘I’ve had a few bouts of depression, and music has always been there for me,’ he shares.

One song that particularly helped him was ‘Rescue Me’ by Fontella Bass. However, during difficult periods, he mostly turned to classical music. ‘I stayed away from contemporary music and enjoyed living in Raglan for 30 years. It was a great escape,’ he says. ‘Music is wonderful therapy.’
