An interior designer’s guide to creating your dream outdoor room
Expert Tips for Designing Your Perfect Outdoor Living Space
Renowned interior designer Mary-Ellen Hinton shares her insights on creating a stylish outdoor area.
Define the Space
The first step in crafting your outdoor room is to define the space. Installing a roof is an excellent way to accomplish this. Not only does it allow you to enjoy the space throughout the year, but it also increases the footprint of your home, adding real value.
There are numerous outdoor roofing options available:
- Louvres: Ideal for sunnier spaces, louvres offer shade when needed and light when not. They can align with the existing roofline, include their own guttering system, and come with optional sensors to close automatically when it rains, keeping your furniture dry.
- Polycarbonate Roof: This durable thermoplastic material resembles glass, resists heat, and provides ample protection from harmful UV rays while allowing plenty of light into your outdoor space.
- Pergolas: Although not typically fully enclosed, pergolas can support a wide range of plants to create an attractive shelter.
Once you have your roof sorted, consider adding walls. In windy areas, a batten wall similar to a pergola can help block the wind. Louvre walls are solid and can open and close as needed. For spaces with lots of sun, sheer outdoor drapes can block the heat during summer.
Walls on one or two sides are great for adding privacy. For a true year-round room, consider enclosing the entire area with high-level glass louvre windows to control light and breezes while staying dry and warm in cooler months.
Rugs
To bring the indoors out, include an outdoor rug in your seating area. Rugs add a soft texture underfoot, richness, and create a warm, inviting space. They also help define the space, creating a cozy area within your outdoor room.
Cladding & Tiles
Add warmth and texture to your exterior walls with your choice of cladding. Timber wall panels are a great option, but outdoor tiles can also add a bold, fun touch. For vibrant colors and patterns, consider Tile Cloud tiles from TileHaus. If you prefer neutrals and textures, terrazzo is an excellent choice for flooring.
Furniture
Instead of filling your outdoor space with a large dining table, consider a more informal couch, especially if your outdoor space is limited. Outdoor couches should be comfortable and generous. Invest in quality pieces that can withstand outdoor conditions. Choose materials that are durable and resistant to wind, rain, and sun fading. Brands now offer outdoor fabrics that perform well both indoors and outdoors.
Bringing the Garden In
Connect your outdoor room to the garden beyond by introducing plenty of plants. Use a few large pots to define the edge of your space or encourage plants to creep up and over your outdoor room for a Mediterranean feel.
Lighting
Well-chosen lighting is crucial for creating night-time ambiance. Wall lights are a common choice, but pendant lights can add a luxurious resort-like feel if you have a solid roof. For a budget-friendly option, consider festoon lighting, which provides ample light and is relatively inexpensive.
