7 Must-Have Kitchen Features for a Stunning Design

As the all-white kitchen trend fades, we’re embracing bold choices with color, texture, and unique forms. Creating a high-impact kitchen is all the rage! Using color in your kitchen can set the mood for your entire home. For a neutral palette, consider soft greens and earthy tones. If pastels are your thing, think soft blue, mint green, or even pale pink. For a more sophisticated vibe, black or dark blue are excellent choices. Timber elements are also popular, giving kitchens a Scandinavian feel, a trend that continues to thrive.

Designers love straight lines, but curved elements in kitchens, from islands to cabinets, are becoming increasingly popular.

1. Splashbacks

A trend we love is extending the benchtop up the wall as a seamless splashback. If you prefer tiles, smaller “kit kat” or “finger” tiles are amazing. Subway tiles are still popular, with many colors, styles, and configurations available. My current favorites are basket weave and herringbone patterns.

2. Benchtops

Stone benchtops continue to be a strong trend due to the wide range of colors and textures available. Your budget and maintenance preferences will play a big part in your decision. Natural stone offers a unique, natural look but requires more care. Engineered stone is stronger and easier to maintain. A new option is porcelain stoneware, which is highly resistant to wear and can withstand direct heat.

3. Lighting

The kitchen is the heart of the home, so getting the lighting right is crucial. Feature lighting can add warmth and style. Wall lights and large pendants can make a striking statement. Ensure your lights are proportionate to your space.

4. Cabinetry Options

There are four main cabinetry materials, each with different benefits:

  • Thermoform panels: Durable, moisture-resistant, and available in various colors and finishes.
  • Low-pressure laminate: Cost-effective and durable, with a range of textures and designs.
  • Veneer: A thin layer of real wood applied to panels, offering a sustainable option.
  • Two-pot lacquer: A hardened paint finish that allows for any color and edge profile.

5. Kitchen Style

Consider the style of kitchen you want. Plain cabinet fronts can use laminate finishes, while moulded or Shaker-style kitchens might use thermoform or two-pot lacquer. Kitchen islands are becoming more exciting, with fronts featuring materials like tiles or architectural mouldings.

6. Handles

While handle-less kitchens have been trendy, handles can add a touch of elegance. Choose the right handles to add a wow factor. If you prefer minimal handles, consider larger ones on tall pantries or integrated fridges. Brass or timber knobs are also great options.

7. Sinks

Sinks are a common topic of discussion. Stainless steel is popular and easy to care for, but colored sinks can make a statement. For a black benchtop, a black sink works well. For white benchtops, an integrated white sink looks amazing but may stain easily.
